Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
sophomore Zipporah Chase (Los Angeles, CA/Carson HS) scored a
game-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, but
visiting Sonoma State held the Toros to a 32.7 shooting percentage
as it led from the opening tip, taking a 63-49 decision on Friday
night at the Torodome.
CSUDH falls to 11-15, 7-14 CCAA, while SSU
improves to 17-9, 14-7 CCAA.
The visitors jumped out quickly, taking a 12-3
lead with just under five minutes elapsed in the first frame.
CSUDH would attempt a comeback behind Natasha Gray's (Long Beach,
CA/LB Poly) eight first-half points, but SSU boasted six players
who scored at least four points in the first 20-minute frame to
take a comfortable 34-25 lead heading into intermission.
Sonoma State would boost its lead to 36-25 on a
Julie Strong jumper to open the second frame. The Seawolves would
continue to put pressure on the Toros, tallying their biggest lead
of 16 on five separate occasions in the first 10 minutes of play.
Led by Natalia Worth's seven and Lacey
Campbell's six second-half points, SSU would increase its lead to
60-40 with 3:35 left in regulation.
A 9-3 run to close the game, courtesy of a
Chase jumper, two Keesha Aldridge (Aiea, HI/Aiea HS) free throws,
a Joi Cooper (Long Beach, CA/Chaparral HS) jumper and a Lindsay
Peloza (Alisa Viejo, CA/Saddleback JC) three-pointer, brought the
Toros to within 12, but a jumper by SSU's Stephanie Scott closed
the scoring, giving the Seawolves the 14-point victory.
Chase added a game-high seven rebounds, while
Gray and Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) contributed
eight points apiece.
Strong and Campbell led the Seawolves,
finishing with respective 13- and 11-point efforts.
As a team, SSU drained 78.3% of its free throws
while CSUDH managed 57.7% from the charity stripe.
The Toros conclude their regular season
tomorrow night as they host the San Francisco State Gators,
honoring lone senior Monique Marquez (Rialto, CA/Eisenhower HS)
with a pregame ceremony. First tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
