CARSON, Calif.--UC San Diego pounded out 29
hits on the day to fuel a California Collegiate Athletic
Association doubleheader sweep today over host Cal State Dominguez
Hills (7-18, 3-13 CCAA). UCSD took the first game 19-9 then
followed it up in the late game with a 10-3 victory.
In the first game, the Tritons scored 10 runs
in the third and fourth innings to take control, 11-4. Joel Clark
hit a two-run homerun in the sixth inning and added single runs in
each the seventh and eighth to take a 16-6 advantage. UC San Diego
added three more in the ninth to take a 19-7 lead.
Zac Cort hit his second homer of the year in
the bottom of the ninth, a two-run shot, to account for the final
margin of 19-9.
CSUDH starter Ramon Mata (0-3) took the loss
going 2.2 innings and allowing five runs, only one earned, on six
hits. Ernesto Paiz gave up five runs in one inning and Brett
Ingstad gave up five more over 3.1 innings on seven hits. Raul
Claros pitched the final two innings allowing four runs on three
hits.
Ian Corso and Fernando Hernandez also hit
homeruns for the Toros. Corso finished the game with three RBI.
For UCSD, Alex Gascon led the squad going
4-for-6 with four RBI. Jeff Riddle and Clark also had three hits
apiece.
Rafael Bergstrom earned the win pitching the
first 6.0 innings allowing six runs on seven hits while striking
out five. Justin Allred tossed the final 3.0 innings to earn the
save.
In the late game, Jose Navarro pitched a
three-hitter to lead the Tritons to a 10-3 win. The score was tied
2-2 before an eight-run outburst by the Tritons in the fifth
inning. In that frame, UCSD sent 12 batters to the plate scoring
eight runs on six hits. The big blow came on Keith Albrecht's
three-run homer and Clark's two-run double.
Trevor Renck (0-3) went the first 4.2 innings
allowing seven runs, all earned, on six hits and five walks. James
Dodson tossed a third of an inning allowing three runs on three
hits. Fred Medina and Ryan Smith pitched the final two scoreless
innings for the Toros.
Navarro (1-1) pitched a complete game gem
allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six. Albrecht
led the squad with four RBI going 2-for-3 at the plate including
his second homerun of the day and third of the season.
The Toros will take on Cal Poly Pomona in a
four-game CCAA series this week hosting the Broncos on Thursday
and Friday with single game beginning at 2:30 p.m.
