SAN BERNARDINO Cal State Dominguez Hills
and Cal State San Bernardino battled to a 5-5 tie after nine
innings Saturday in the second game of their doubleheader only to
have the game suspended by darkness after the Toros defeated the
Coyotes, 6-2 in the first game of the CCAA twinbill.
The Toros improved to 13-9-1 on the season and
8-9 in the CCAA while the Coyotes are 5-12 overall and 4-11 in the
CCAA. The tied game will be completed at a later date.
Lisa Grove homered, doubled and drove in three
runs to lead the Toros to the win in the opener, backing the
three-hit pitching of Nina Distefano. The only runs off the Toros
pitcher were solo home runs by Crystal Fraijo and Tami James.
Distefano struck out eight and walked two.
In game two, the Toros scored two unearned runs
in the first and led 2-1 until they added two more in the fifth on
two hits a walk and two Coyote errors. CSUSB responded with four
runs in the bottom of the inning, the big blow a two-run double by
Nicole Gomez, for a 5-4 Coyote lead.
With two outs in the top of the seventh and
down by a run, the Toros scored the equalizer when Lori Moreno
stole second and came home on a single up the middle by Kim
O'Hanian.
Both teams left the bases full in the eighth
inning and each team stranded a runner in the ninth before the
umpires suspended the game.
