Monique Marquez, the Toros lone senion on
this year's squad, was honored in her last home game. |
Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
sophomore Zipporah Chase (Los Angeles, CA/Carson HS) tied for
game-high honors with 24 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds,
but visiting San Francisco State benefitted from three Gators who
scored in double figures as SFSU defeated CSUDH 72-63 on Saturday
night at the Torodome in the final game of the regular season. The
Toros end their season at 11-16, 7-15 CCAA, while SFSU ends its
season at 14-13, 10-12 CCAA.
Inspired by senior Monique Marquez (Rialto,
CA/Eisenhower HS) playing in the final game of her Toro career,
CSUDH started quickly, opening a 19-7 lead with nearly nine
minutes elapsed in the first half. Crystal Maciel (Los Angeles,
CA/Los Angeles CC) and Chase did most of the damage, scoring nine
and eight points, respectively.
Bolstered by Maciel's three three-pointers in
the first 20-minute frame, the Toros kept the Gators at a
double-figure deficit until the 2:14 mark when SFSU began its
comeback, outscoring the Toros 8-1 to whittle CSUDH's lead to
33-30 entering the half.
The visiting Gators would take their first lead
of the night at 35-34 on a jumper by Cristal Fernandez. SFSU would
benefit from Fernandez's 19 second-half points and take control of
the contest, increasing its lead to 13 points with 3:56 left in
the contest.
Behind a Chase jumper and a Lindsay Peloza
(Alisa Viejo, CA/Saddleback JC) three-pointer, the Toros would
close the gap to 68-63 with :20 remaining in regulation, but a
string of six-consecutive free throws by Fernandez would seal the
Toros' fate as the Gators took a nine-point decision on senior day
at the Torodome.
Chase finished with her 14th double-double of
the year, while Maciel and Joi Cooper (Long Beach, CA/Chaparral
HS) contributed nine points each in the loss.
SFSU's Fernandez tied Chase with a game-high 24
points, while Chrissy Ridenour's 22 and Renee Jimenez's 10 points
rounded out the Gator double-figure scorers.
Ridenour and Alex Brady shared team-high
rebound totals with 11 each for the Gators.
In honoring their lone senior, the Toros'
Marquez started her first game and saw one minute of action since
suffering an injury after only 13 games this season.
