Cal Poly Pomona Offense Takes Center Stage in 18-5 Victory Over Cal State Dominguez Hills
March 12, 2004

Complete Box Score

Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Jose Montes (Pacoima, CA/San Fernando HS) blasted his fourth home run of the season in leading a trio of Toros who tallied two hits in the contest, but visiting Cal Poly Pomona's Matt Lopez blasted two home runs as part of his game-high five hits as the Broncos ran away with an 18-5 victory on Friday afternoon on Toro Field.

CSUDH drops to 7-20, 3-15 CCAA, while CPP improves to 14-9-2, 11-6-1 CCAA.

Cal Poly Pomona jumped on CSUDH starter Gustavo Hernandez (Lynwood, CA/Lynwood HS) early, scoring six earned runs on six hits over the first 2.1 innings. Toro reliever Ernesto Paiz (Redondo Beach, CA/Sacred Heart) failed to provide relief as the Broncos touched him for five runs in one inning of work. The visitors scored the game's first 16 runs before Montes put the Toros on the scoreboard, blasting a two-out home run over the left-center field fence.

After CPP tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth, the Toro bats came alive as they knocked home four runs on five hits to account for the final runs of the contest, the key hits coming on RBI hits by Zac Cort (El Cerrito, CA/El Cerrito HS), Daniel Pilimai (Sacramento, CA/Rockland HS) and Ian Corso (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS).

Pilimai and Houston Hernandez (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) lined two hits apiece for the Toros while CPP's Lopez led the Broncos with a 5-for-6 day at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in six.

Matt Stevens also contributed to the Bronco offense, tallying four hits with three RBI.

Hernandez took the loss in facing 16 total batters (1-2), while CPP's Jose Munoz hurled six innings and scattered just two hits to win his fifth game of the season (5-2).

Cal State Dominguez Hills travels to Pomona for a Saturday doubleheader as they complete the four-game series against the Broncos tomorrow. First pitch of game one is scheduled for a 12 noon start.-
