Honolulu, HIHawaii Pacific won the first
game of todays non-conference doubleheader, 10-5, over
visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu,
HI. The Sea Warriors then took the nightcap 11-2 to earn the
non-conference sweep.
CSUDH is now 9-25 while HPU improves to 11-15.
The Toros jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first
inning on an RBI double by 1B Daniel Pilimai (Sacramento/Rocklin
HS). However, the Sea Warriors knotted the score in the bottom of
the frame on a two-out run-scoring single off the bat of LF Greg
Benoit.
Hawaii Pacific pushed across single runs in the
second and third innings to forge a 3-1 lead.
CSUDH trimmed the lead in the fourth when
Pilimai belted his eighth home run of the season, a deep blast
over the left-center field wall, making it 3-2.
Cal State Dominguez Hills then took the lead in
the fifth with three runs two hits and an error. RF Zac Corts
(El Cerrito/El Cerrito HS) two-run single to right highlighted the
inning and Pilimai drove in his third run of the game with a
sacrifice fly.
HPU took back the lead for good in the bottom
of the inning with three runs on four hits and two walks. The Sea
Warriors broke the game open in the sixth plating four unearned
runs on three hits and two Toro errors to account for the 10-5
final.
Cort led CSUDH with three hits going 3-for-4
and knocking in two runs. Pilimai, who finished with three RBI,
and LF Jose Montes (Pacoima/San Fernando HS) each had two hits
apiece.
Chris Abbott (1-3), who came on in relief of
starter Gustavo Hernandez (Lynwood/Lynwood HS), took the loss.
Abbott tossed 2.0 innings allowing three runs on three hits. James
Dodson (Long Beach/Lakewood HS) and Ryan Smith (Long
Beach/Millikan HS) went the final 1.2 innings allowing four runs
on four hits.
In the nightcap, HPU scored three runs in the
first three innings and sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth
scoring eight runs to take command, 11-0. The Toros pushed across
two runs in the seventh on RBI singles by 3B Fernando Hernandez
(Southgate/Southgate HS) and 2B Houston Hernandez (La Mirada/St.
Paul HS) to avoid the shutout.
Sea Warrior starter Kai Austin (3-1) hurled a
four-hitter to earn his third win of the year.
Fernando Hernandez led the Toros going 3-for-3
and broke up the shutout bid with an RBI-single in the seventh.
Toro starter Trevor Renck (0-4) suffered the
loss going the first 2.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits.
Fred Medina came on in the third and was effective in the fourth
and fifth but then gave up seven of the eight runs in the sixth
inning. His final line was 3.0 innings, eight hits, seven runs and
three strikeouts.
The series continues Sunday with a doubleheader
scheduled at Aloha Stadium beginning at noon.
