CARSON, Calif.--San Francisco State pounded out
23 hits en route to a 20-11 California Collegiate Athletic
Association win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday afternoon at
Toro Field.
The win improved the Gators to 18-17 and 9-11
in CCAA play, while the loss drops CSUDH to 10-31 and 5-19 in
league action.
SFSU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the
first on RBI singles from Carlos Medina and Shane Stover. But the
Toros answered back in the bottom of the frame taking the lead,
3-2, on Ruben Salazar's three-run home run, his fourth of the
year, deep over the left field fence.
After Ian Corso's solo blast in the second gave
Cal State Dominguez Hills a 4-2 margin, the Gators took the lead
for good with six runs in the third inning on five hits and two
Toro errors. The big blows in the inning came on Medina's two-run
double and Rich Daly's two-run single with two outs to take an 8-3
lead.
The Toros got another run in the bottom of the
third on Jason Flores' RBI double to make it 8-4. However, SFSU
plated eight more runs over the next three innings to take a
commanding 16-5 advantage.
CSUDH put two more runs on the board in the
sixth and seventh innings on a sacrifice fly by Salazar, an RBI
single by Flores and a two-run single up the middle by David Leos.
But that was all the home team could manage while the Gators
tacked on four more runs in the final three innings to go on for
the 20-11 victory.
The 23 hits given up by the CSUDH pitching
staff was the most ever since Arizona pounded out 22 hits in the
1997 season. Daly led the Gator offense with six hits going a
perfect 6-for-6 with three RBI, including a home run. Medina went
4-for-7 with four RBI and three runs scored and came just a home
run shy from hitting for the cycle. Four other players had three
hits apiece.
Ben Clayton earned the win in relief tossing
2.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Keith Albright worked
the final 3.2 innings to earn the save. Albright allowed two runs
on two hits and struck out three.
For the Toros, Salazar led the squad driving in
five runs while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Zac Cort also had
three of the Toro 18 hits finishing 3-for-6 with two runs scored.
Starter Brett Ingstad (0-2) suffered the loss
going the first 2.0 innings allowing seven runs, five earned, on
seven hits.
Cal State Dominguez Hills returns to action at
home on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Hawaii
Pacific. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
