Wildcats Open Up on Toros Baseball Team

CHICO - The Chico State baseball team racked up 32 runs on 32 hits to take both ends of a CCAA doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills today at Nettleton Stadium. Game scores were 12-3 and 20-2.

The 20 runs in game two is the most by the Wildcats this season and was spurred by a 13-run fifth inning. The Wildcats sent 18 batters to the plate in the inning, recording nine hits and taking advantage of two Toro errors. Ryan Wulfert, Brian Lucas, and Jeff Walker each had two hits in the frame and Ryan Mathes was hit by a pitch twice.

Drew Carpenter (3-0) recorded his first complete game of the season, giving up two runs on six hits, striking out five and walking none in the seven-inning second game.

In the early game, Mike Jones (6-2) threw seven innings, giving up two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Nick Bryant finished out the game, allowing one run on three hits in the final two innings.

All but one Wildcat batter recorded at least one hit in the doubleheader. For the day, Lucas was 6-for-9 with six RBI, Walker was 3-for-5, Levin was 3-for-6, Joseph Ramos was 4-for-9 and Wulfert was 3-for-7 with five RBI.

The Wildcats (25-12-1, 16-9-1) have now won the first three games of the series and will look for the sweep when the teams meet for the final game tomorrow at noon.

Dominguez Hills (10-36, 5-22) used eight pitchers today with no one escaping with out giving up at least one run. Gustavo Hernandez (1-4) took the loss in game one, giving up seven runs, six earned, in 4.1 innings of work. Fred Medina (1-1) lasted just 1.1 innings to start off game two, allowing four runs on three hits.

Jason Flores swung the best bat for the Toros, recording five hits in the doubleheader, three in game one. Zac Cort also had three hits in game one. Jose Montes had three hits on the day, two in the second game.
