vs. WWU vs.
HSU
Modesto, CA --- Cal State Dominguez Hills
juniors Lisa Grove (Buena Park, CA/Kennedy HS) and Valerie Long
(Stockton, CA/St. Mary's HS) duplicated yesterday's effort by
again throwing complete-game victories as the Toros defeated both
Western Washington, 8-0, and No. 3-ranked Humboldt State, 2-1, on
day two of the Easton Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State
Stanislaus.
With the two victories, the Toros improve to
23-13-1.
Grove was the story of game one as she threw a
no-hitter at Western Washington, her second no-no of the year and
sixth shutout of the season. Picking up her ninth win of the
season, the Buena Park native allowed only two runners to reach
base in striking out six and facing 17 batters total, just two
over the minimum required for five innings.
Offensively, CSUDH continued its hot hitting,
garnering multiple hits from Cindy Perry (Victorville,
CA/Silverado HS), Crystal Dingman (Sunland, CA/Verdugo HS), Dani
Proctor, (La Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS), Linda Reyes
(Garden Grove, CA/Pacifica HS), Natalie Greco (Downey, CA/Warren
HS) and Lori Moreno (Los Angeles, CA/California HS), and a
game-high 2 RBI off the bat of Genvielle DeCicco (Fountain Valley,
CA/Trabuco Hills HS) in the 8-0 shutout that was called after
five innings due to the mercy-run rule.
Game two featured a possible preview of the
NCAA postseason as the Toros and No. 3-ranked Humboldt State
Yellowjackets faced off in the late game. After HSU picked up a
run in the bottom of their first inning, the Toros would
eventually find the answer to HSU starter Motzny, scoring single
runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the come-from-behind
2-1 victory. Martinez and Greco did the honors in this game, each
driving in an RBI to give the Toros a sweep on day two of the
Tournament, with Greco's game-winner coming on a two-out single to
right field to drive in pinch-runner Sylvia Bonilla. (Los Angeles,
CA/Fremont HS).
In the circle, Long continued her stellar
pitching, scattering five hits in picking up her ninth win of the
season (9-0). She fanned six Jackets in the pitcher's duel,
retiring 9 of the final 11 batters to face her.
CSUDH faces Western Washington tomorrow at
11:15 a.m. in the Gold Championship Bracket, with the winner
advancing to play against one of six other schools in a semifinal
match up. The final game of the Tournament, pitting winners of
each semifinal, is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
