Game 1 Game
2
Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills juniors
Lisa Grove (Buena Park, CA/Kennedy HS) and Valerie Long (Stockton,
CA/St. Mary's HS) led the Toros to a Friday afternoon sweep over
visiting Cal State Stanislaus, besting the Warriors 3-1 in game
one before taking a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.
With the sweep, CSUDH improves to 25-14-1,
15-12 CCAA, while CSUS falls to 16-26, 9-17 CCAA.
The opening game saw the Toros strike for all
three of their runs in the top of the third inning as as a Natalie
Greco (Downey, CA/Warren HS) single to left field started the
two-out rally. After a Cindy Perry (Victorville, CA/Silverado HS)
single advanced Greco, Dani Proctor (La Crescenta, CA/La Crescenta
HS) stung a double down the left field line, to give the Toros a
2-0 lead, and proceeded to steal third base and score on a CSUS
error.
That would be all starter Grove would need as
the junior cruised, facing four batters over the minimum in the
first five innings.
The Warriors would score their only run on a
Jackie Miller home run to lead off the top of the sixth inning,
her fifth of the season, but Grove would get out of the sixth, and
fan two of the four batters she faced in the seventh to earn her
10th win of the season (10-3).
Grove was in control as she faced 28 batters,
striking out six with no walks.
Perry and Greco led the Toros with two hits
apiece in game one, while CSUS' Miller and Megan Law each tallied
two hits in the Warrior loss.
Miller hurled all six innings, allowing five
hits and two earned runs, to take the loss (6-13).
CSUDH used game one's momentum to strike
quickly in the nightcap, spotting game two starter Long a 3-0 lead
courtesy of three stolen bases, a 2-RBI Proctor triple and a Linda
Reyes (Garden Grove, CA/St. John's) RBI double. The Toros would
tack on two more runs in the bottom of their fifth inning,
capitalizing on a CSUS error to widen the advantage to 5-0.
That would be more than enough for Long, who
scattered six hits in winning her 10th game of the year, and
garnering her fifth shutout of the season. Long retired
eight-consecutive Warriors at one point, including the side in
order twice. Not one CSUS runner reached third base as the
Stockton, CA, native grew stronger as the game progressed,
finishing the game with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Greco led the Toros with three hits in game
two, while Proctor's two RBI led the CSUDH run producers.
Miller topped CSUS with two hits to lead the
Warriors. CSUS' Nikki Bartley hurled all six innings to take the
loss (9-11).
