PHOENIX, Ariz. The Grand Canyon
University Antelopes took both games of a doubleheader with the
Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (27-16-1,17-14 CCAA) on Friday
afternoon at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium, winning 1-0 and 4-3.
In the first game GCU and Dominguez went
scoreless for 5 ½ innings before Lopes designated
player, Gloria Slakoff lined a single into left field driving in
Laura Huff as GCU took the 1-0 advantage.
GCU starter Kristen Swetel went the distance
allowing only 3 hits to pick up the complete game shutout as GCU
won 1-0. Slakoff led all hitters with 2 and the games lone RBI.
In the second game Dominguez jumped out early
with their lead off hitter Cindy Perry nailing a single and a two
base error to set the table for Crystal Dingman. Dingman drove in
Perry as the Toros took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
GCU came back in the bottom of the first with a
sac fly by Nicole Seymour driving in Krista Jacob. With the score
2-1 in favor of Dominguez in the 4th Swetel drove her 4th home run
of the season to tie the game at 2 apiece.
The Toros jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the top
of the 5th and kept it going into the bottom of the 7th inning.
With two on and 1 out Tiffany Collier nailed a pinch-hit single
into left field driving in Meagan Stribling to tie the game at 3.
Jacob was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Heather
Keepers. Keepers hit the second pitch she saw into shallow right
field driving in Dukes and giving the Lopes the 4-3 win.
GCU wins the season series with Dominguez 4
games to 0. The Toros came into this weekend ranked 4th in the
West Region, two spots ahead of GCU. The top 6 in the West will
make it into the post-season tournament.
GCU is back in action tomorrow when the CS San
Bernardino Coyotes come to Phoenix for a doubleheader. First pitch
is scheduled for Noon.
