Game 1 Game
2
Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal
State Stanislaus played a marathon doubleheader Saturday and, at
the end of the day after the dust had settled, the two teams
produced 44 runs and 60 hits resulting in 1-1 split. The Warriors
took game one, 13-11, with the Toros winning the nightcap, 12-8.
With the split decision the Toros are 15-45,
9-30 CCAA while Cal State Stanislaus is 17-32-1, 8-31-1 CCAA.
Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Fernando
Hernandez (South Gate, CA/South Gate HS) led the Toros' offensive
charge with seven hits in the double header. Juniors Chris
Martinez (Torrance, CA/South HS), Jose Montes (Pacoima, CA/San
Fernando HS) chipped in 5RBI's apiece, and Ian Corso (Thousand
Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS) added 4 RBI's to the Toros offense.
The visiting Warriors used a six hit day by
Jason Louis, and home runs by Cody Crossman, Adam Garner, Josh
Burnett, and Jeff Crabtree to match the Toros offensive power.
Game 1 started out quickly for the Toros with
senior Zac Cort (El Cerrito, CA/El Cerrito HS) tripling to off the
left field fence, and with that hit, Cort break the single season
hit record of 83 set last year by his team mate junior Ruben
Salazar (Lynwood, CA/St. John Bosco HS). Montes followed by
singling up the middle to drive Cort home for the first of his
five RBI's on the day.
Over the next two innings the Toros added six
more runs on nine hits using a total team effort. Consecutive
doubles by Frankie Valle (Whittier, CA/Santa Fe HS) and Martinez,
and single by Cort pushed across three runs. While a Houston
Hernandez (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) double and a 2RBI single by
Martinez rounded out the six run effort.
The starter for the Toros Gus Hernandez
(Lynwood, CA/Lynwood HS) seemed to be on cruise control for first
half of the game, scattering 2 hits over four innings of work, but
in the 5th the Warriors began to make their charge. A one out
single by Jeff Crabtree followed by a walk given to Adam Gordon
and an error by the center fielder led to the first run of the
game for Stanislaus to make it 7-1. With runners on second and
third Cody Cross blasted a three-run home run over the left center
field fence to bring them within three.
The Warriors would add one more run in the 5th
and another five more in the 6th on doubles by Crossman, Louis,
and Jason Pasma to account for all six of their runs.
The Toros and Warriors would battle the rest of
the way in game one, but the Toros did not have enough fire power
to overtake the late surge by the Warriors.
Toros starter Gustavo Hernandez drops to 1-2,
while Mario Reyes improved to 4-5 on the year.
Game 2 started even faster than game one, with
the Toros putting up three runs in the first inning. The majority
of the first inning offense was provided by Montes, who took
Marshall Beyer deep to right center field for a two-run home run
for his seventh of the year.
The Warriors would respond and take the lead in
the third on single by Hecotr Alaniz scoring Chad Rolen. But the
biggest blow came on a three-run home run to center field by third
baseman Jeff Crabtree off starter Raul Claros (Hawthorne, CA/Los
Angeles HS).
The Toros would retake the lead in the fourth
on a sacrifice fly by Cort scoring Efren Esparza (Compton,
CA/Dominguez HS) and a double by Montes scoring F. Hernandez.
However, once again the Warriors would answer
the Toros' offensive output with two-run Josh Burnett home run in
the 5th and his double in the 6th, along with a single by Jeff
Crabtree and to take a 8-6 lead.
But in the bottom of the six the Toros exploded
for six runs on a pair of RBI singles by Joey Caira (La Palma,
CA/Kennedy HS), Montes, and error by the second baseman allowing
the third and go ahead run to score to make it 9-8. Then to make
sure the game was out of reach Corso launch a ball over the right
field fence for a three-run home run, his 5th of the year to give
the game its final score of 12-8.
For the Toros James Dodson (Long Beach,
CA/Lakewood HS) picked up the win in relief, improving his season
record to 3-3. Adam Gardner record the loss for the Warriors while
coming for starter Marshall Beyer to drop his record to 1-1
The Toros will conclude the four game series
with Cal State Stanilaus Sunday April 25, 2004, with the first
pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm (Noon). Currently the series is 2-1
in favor of the Toros. |
