Honolulu, HI -- Cal State Dominguez Hills used
timely hitting by Dani Proctor (La Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley
HS) and Lisa Grove (Buena Park, CA/Kennedy HS) to sweep Hawaii
Pacific University in a nonconference doubleheader on Sunday
afternoon at Sea Warrior Diamond, taking a 3-2 opening game
decision before staging a come-from-behind 6-5 win in the
nightcap.
With the two victories, the Toros improve to
31-18-1 while the Sea Warriors fall to 21-20.
The Toros generated a 2-0 lead in the top of
their third inning as Ally Williams (La Crescenta, CA/Humboldt
State) and Cindy Perry (Victorville, CA/Silverado HS) reached base
to start the inning, were moved to third and second bases on a
groundout, and scored on a Proctor single to left field.
After the hosts cut the deficit in half with a
single run in the bottom of their fourth frame, the Toros struck
again in their next at-bat as Perry singled home Williams, who
singled to left center with one out and moved to second on an HPU
error.
HPU would again narrow the margin to one with a
single run in the bottom of the fifth, but starter Nina Distefano
(Lakewood, CA/Long Beach CC) and the Toro defense buckled down,
turning a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the inning allowing a
single run.
Distefano gained momentum from her stellar
defense, shutting down the Sea Warriors over the final two innings
to pick up her fifth win of the season (5-8). The Lakewood, CA,
native scattered seven hits in the game, benefitting from Perry's
game-high two hits in the opener.
HPU starter Malia Sullivan hurled seven innings
in the loss.
CSUDH started early in the nightcap as Proctor
belted the first of her three hits to score Lori Moreno (Los
Angeles, CA/California HS), who beat out an infield single with
one out in the first inning. A Crystal Dingman (Sunland,
CA/College of the Canyons) fielder's choice would plate Proctor,
giving the Toros a 2-0 lead.
The Sea Warriors would battle back, benefitting
from three questionable calls in the frame to score three runs and
take a 3-2 lead.
Unfazed, the Toros would score one run in the
second and two in the third to regain the lead for good, the big
blows coming on a 2RBI single by Grove, the second of her three
hits.
After the Sea Warriors rallied with a run in
the fifth, Grove struck again, singling home Williams, who drew a
one-out walk in the top of the seventh.
HPU would tack on a run in its final at-bat,
but it would not be enough as CSUDH starter Kim O'Hanian (Norwalk,
CA/St. Paul HS) would throw her third complete game of the season
in picking up her second win of the year (2-3).
Grove and Proctor led the Toros with three hits
apiece in the nightcap, with Grove picking up three RBI in the
game.
HPU starter Jessica Parra also threw a complete
game to take the loss.
The two schools continue their four-game set on
Monday, with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for a 2:00
p.m. start.
