BELLINGHAM, Wash.--Sophomore Bryan Newman
(Temecula/College of the Desert) fired a 5-over 77 during the
first round of the 2004 NCAA II Men's Northwest/West Super
Regional Monday afternoon at the Bellingham Golf Country Club in
Bellingham, WA. Newman goes into the clubhouse in a four-way tie
for 33rd place, nine strokes off the pace of the leaders.
Newman was four-over in the front nine and one
over in the back nine to card the first round 77. The day started
off on the right note with Newman recording a birdie on the
467-yard first hole. However, three bogey's to finish out the
front nine set the tone for the remainder of the day.
In all, Newman had three birdie's and six
bogey's in the first round, including a double-bogey on the
433-yard ninth hole.
Play continues tomorrow at the beatiful
Bellingham Golf and Country Club. The top individual in each
region from schools not advancing to nationals earns an individual
berth to the national tournament.
In team standings, led by a 4-under par 68 by
Luke Bennett (So., Bellingham/Sehome), host Western Washington
University holds a one-shot lead in the West Region standings.
The Vikings posted a 5-under-par 283 on the
6,523-yard, par-72 course, one shot better than UC San Diego
(284). Chico State, which is ranked No.1 in NCAA II by Golfstat
and was 10-under at one point in the opening round, is at 287, and
Cal State Stanislaus sits one shot further back with an even-par
288.
Bennett shares the individual lead in the West,
which features six of the top 12 ranked teams in NCAA II, with Joe
Dolby of UC San Diego. Four players are a shot back at 3-under 69,
and three more are at 2-under.
The two regions (West/Northwest) play separate
but simultaneous competitions on the same course. Ten regional
team champions across the country at the five super regionals earn
automatic berths in the NCAA II National Championships on May
12-15 at Orlando, Fla. Eight at-large berths are also available to
teams finishing in the top five in their regional tourney.
Second-round play in the 54-hole event begins
at 8 a.m. Tuesday, with the final round Wednesday.
