Day One Results

BELLINGHAM, Wash.--Sophomore Bryan Newman (Temecula/College of the Desert) moved up to 28th-place after shooting an even 72 Tuesday afternoon in the NCAA II Men's Golf Super Regional at the beautiful Bellingham Golf and Country Club in Bellingham, WA.

Newman followed up his 5-over 77 yesterday with a 72 today and finds himself in 28th-place after 36 holes of action. Newman birdied four holes today, including the difficult 518-yard par five 11th hole. He was 2-under after consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. However, two bogey's in the back nine kept him from finishing the day under par.

Newman is just one shot behind Adam Lewis (148) of Sonoma State University who is one of the other five individuals competing for a chance to advance to the national tournament.

Ryan Thornberry of Cal State Stanislaus leads the field carding consecutive 69's for a total of 138 after day two.

Led by a 3-under par 69 by All-American J.J. Jakovac, No.1-ranked Chico State shot 7-under 281 to take a seven-stroke lead in the West Region standings following Tuesday’s second round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf West/Northwest Super Regional.

The third and final round of the 54-hole event takes place Wednesday (8 a.m.) at the 6,523-yard, par-72 Bellingham Golf and Country Club course.

The Wildcats, ranked No.1 in NCAA II by Golfstat as well as in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America/Precept Coaches Poll, are 8-under with a 36-hole score of 568. They began Tuesday’s play on the back nine and were 9-under over that stretch after being 2-over on that same nine while completing Monday’s opening round.

UC San Diego, the only other school in the tournament in red numbers at 1-under, is second at 575 (291). The Tritons are among four schools within three strokes of one another.

Cal State Stanislaus (289) and Saint Martin’s, which had the day’s second-best round of 284, are tied for third at 577, with first-round leader and host Western Washington dropping to fifth at 578 (295). The Vikings shot 283 Monday and held a one-stroke lead over UC San Diego coming into today’s play.

Jakovac, who had six birdies and one double bogey in Tuesday’s round, is in a three-way tie for second at 141 with Western’s Chris Anderson (Jr., Oak Harbor) (72) and Joe Dolby (73) of UC San Diego. A first-team All-America the last two years and the NCAA II national champion in 2002, Jakovac entered the tourney as the top-ranked Division II player in the country with a 70.3 scoring average.

Tied for fifth at 142 are Chico State’s Marc Peterson, who shot 2-under 70, and Alan Scheer (72) of UC San Diego.

The West and Northwest regions play separate but simultaneous competitions on the same course. Ten regional team champions across the country at the five super regionals earn automatic berths in the NCAA II National Championships on May 12-15 at Orlando, Fla. Eight at-large berths are also available to teams finishing in the top five in their regional tourney.
