BELLINGHAM, Wash.--Sophomore linkster Bryan Newman (Palm Springs/College of the Desert) shot a 78 in the third and final round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Super Regional to finish in a tie for 33rd-place.

Newman finished with a three-round total of 227 (77-72-78) just seven strokes behind Adam Lewis of Sonoma State, the top individual qualifier. Ryan Thornberry of Cal State Stanislaus earned medalist honors with a 209 (69-69-71).

On Wednesday afternoon, Newman struggled with double-bogeys on the eighth and 14th holes. He also had three bogeys in the back nine.

Led by All-America senior J.J. Jakovac and junior Marc Peterson, nationally No.1-ranked Chico State shot a 1-under-par 287 in the final round and pulled away to win the West Region title by 13 shots Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf West/Northwest Super Regional.

The Wildcats, ranked No.1 in NCAA Division II by Golfstat as well as in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America/Precept Coaches Poll, finished with a 54-hole total of 9-under 855 at the 6,523-yard, par 72 Bellingham Golf and Country Club Course.

Chico State, which led by seven strokes after the second round and was the only team of the 16 at the super regional to finish under par, earns an automatic berth in the NCAA II National Championships on May 12-15 at Orlando, Fl. It will be the eighth national appearance and second straight for the Wildcats, who placed fifth at nationals last year as an at-large entry.

Joining Chico State is St. Cloud State, which won the Northwest Region.

Ten regional team champions across the country at the five super regionals earn automatic berths at nationals. Eight at-large berths are also available to teams finishing in the top five in their regional tourney.

Saint Martin’s, the No.8 seed in the West Region, shot a final-round 283 to take second place in the West Region at 868. Cal State Stanislaus, led by medalist Ryan Thornberry, was third at 871, followed by UC San Diego at 872 and host Western Washington, the first-round leader, at 874. The Vikings moved up two spots late in the final round to grab the final at-large eligible spot, finishing just ahead of Hawaii-Hilo (875) and Cal State Bakersfield (878). Grand Canyon completed the West field at 920.

The West earned three at-large berths last year, and six of the top 12 teams in this season’s NCAA II rankings are in that region.

Thornberry, a sophomore, shot a final-round 1-under 71 to finish at 7-under 209, one shot ahead of Jakovac, the top-ranked player in NCAA II and the medalist at the 2002 national tournament, who had a final-round 69. Thornberry earned honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman.

Nick Mason of Hawaii-Hilo had Wednesday’s best round, shooting a 4-under 68 to finish third at 5-under 211. Peterson was fourth at 212 and Saint Martin’s Shane Prante fifth at 213. Both shot final-round 70s.

The two regions played separate but simultaneous competitions on the same course.
