CSUDH Honors Student-Athletes With Awards Reception
May 11, 2004

Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills hosted its annual Toros Athletics Awards Reception yesterday afternoon at the CSUDH Aquatics Center, honoring student-athletes from the 2003-04 school year. Emceed by Assistant Athletics Director Patrick Guillen, the event was attended by contingents from all 11 CSUDH sports, as well as by faculty and staff from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

2004 Toros Athletics Awards Recipients

At a Monday reception, the annual Toros athletics awards were presented. Honored were (L-R): Chris Wimmer, Dani Proctor, Victor Guerrero, Sheila Cook, Alba Garcia, and Dave Linsangan.

In all, six awards were presented to Toros student-athletes.

Soccer's Chris Wimmer (Huntington Beach, CA/Fountain Valley HS/Business Marketing) and Alba Garcia (Chino, CA/Don Lugo HS/Communications) received the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Scholar Athletes of the Year for their successful work in the classroom.

Sheila Cook (Torrance, CA/West Torrance HS/Communications), another soccer player, received the Jennifer Winkelspecht Award, named after former Toro volleyball player Winkelspecht who passed away before the start of the 1995 season and is given annually to the Toro who most exemplifies great personal character and has had his/her achievement recognized by the student-athlete educators and peers.

Men's soccer All-American and CCAA Player of the Year Victor Guerrero (Santa Ana, CA/Century HS/History & Spanish) and All-CCAA softball senior Dani Proctor (La Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS/Liberal Studies) were recipients of the Student-Athletes of the Year.

Men's golfer Dave Linsangan (Paramount, CA/Carson HS/Physical Education) was chosen for the Dr. Richard Butwell Senior Award, the most prestigious of CSUDH's awards. Dr. Butwell is a late former President of the University, and his award is bestowed upon the student-athlete who goes above and beyond the call of duty, not only achieving success in the classroom and on the playing field, but also is an active member of the community as a representative of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Linsangan, a four-year letterwinner for the men's golf team, maintains a cumulative 3.22 GPA and is scheduled to graduate this year with a degree in Physical Education. Additionally, Linsangan is in his third season as both a volunteer assistant coach for Carson High School and member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and recently received the 2004 National Association of Sports/Physical Education Award Major for his work in athletic training.
