Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills hosted
its annual Toros Athletics Awards Reception yesterday afternoon at
the CSUDH Aquatics Center, honoring student-athletes from the
2003-04 school year. Emceed by Assistant Athletics Director
Patrick Guillen, the event was attended by contingents from all 11
CSUDH sports, as well as by faculty and staff from Cal State
Dominguez Hills.

At a Monday reception, the
annual Toros athletics awards were presented. Honored were
(L-R): Chris Wimmer, Dani Proctor, Victor Guerrero,
Sheila Cook, Alba Garcia, and Dave Linsangan. |
In all, six awards were presented to Toros
student-athletes.
Soccer's Chris Wimmer (Huntington
Beach, CA/Fountain Valley HS/Business Marketing) and Alba
Garcia (Chino, CA/Don Lugo HS/Communications) received the Dr.
Hal Charnofsky Memorial Scholar Athletes of the Year for their
successful work in the classroom.
Sheila Cook (Torrance, CA/West Torrance
HS/Communications), another soccer player, received the Jennifer
Winkelspecht Award, named after former Toro volleyball player
Winkelspecht who passed away before the start of the 1995 season
and is given annually to the Toro who most exemplifies great
personal character and has had his/her achievement recognized by
the student-athlete educators and peers.
Men's soccer All-American and CCAA Player of
the Year Victor Guerrero (Santa Ana, CA/Century HS/History
& Spanish) and All-CCAA softball senior Dani Proctor (La
Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS/Liberal Studies) were recipients
of the Student-Athletes of the Year.
Men's golfer Dave Linsangan (Paramount,
CA/Carson HS/Physical Education) was chosen for the Dr. Richard
Butwell Senior Award, the most prestigious of CSUDH's awards. Dr.
Butwell is a late former President of the University, and his
award is bestowed upon the student-athlete who goes above and
beyond the call of duty, not only achieving success in the
classroom and on the playing field, but also is an active member
of the community as a representative of Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Linsangan, a four-year letterwinner for the
men's golf team, maintains a cumulative 3.22 GPA and is scheduled
to graduate this year with a degree in Physical Education.
Additionally, Linsangan is in his third season as both a volunteer
assistant coach for Carson High School and member of the Student
Athletic Advisory Committee, and recently received the 2004
National Association of Sports/Physical Education Award Major for
his work in athletic training. |
