Ron Prettyman has been named the 2003-04 Division II West
Region Athletics Director of the year. |
Prettyman will receive his award, which
highlights the efforts of athletics directors for their commitment
and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding
communities, at the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon at NACDAs
39th Annual Convention in Dallas, TX, on June 12.
Prettyman began his tenure as Athletics
Director at Cal State Dominguez Hills in April 1995. During his
nine years on the Carson campus, he has expanded the program from
eight sports to its current level of eleven, oversaw and
coordinated the acquisition of the Hughes Education and Athletics
Center, and was instrumental in the efforts to bring the Home
Depot Center on the campus of CSUDH.
An active member of the NACDA, Prettyman is a
former member of the NCAA Nominating Committee and the NACDA
Executive Committee, is a past President of the NCAA Division II
Athletic Directors Association as well as a three-time presenter
at the NACDA National Convention. In addition, he served as the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) President during
the 2001-02 school year.
Prettyman is very active with organizations on
and off campus, which includes serving on the Board of Directors
for the local Carson Boys & Girls Club as well as serving as
the chairman of the CCAA Management Committee. Currently, he
serves on the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee and is a
member of the United States Sports Academy Directors Cup Board of
Directors.
Prettyman received his bachelor's degree in
health, physical education from Southern California College in
1977, where he played basketball for three years and tennis for
two. He then earned his master's degree in education from Cal
State Stanislaus in 1988.
A resident of Los Alamitos, Ron and Carol, his
wife of 27 years, have two children together, Shara and Ronnie.
Ronnie is currently on a baseball scholarship at NCAA Division I
power Cal State Fullerton and was selected by the Milwaukee
Brewers during this years Major League Baseball draft.
I am honored and humbled to have
received this award from my colleagues, peers and friends,
says Prettyman. The only way an Athletics Director can
achieve success is to have quality people around him. I am
grateful to my staff and coaches for their support and for being
willing to go the extra mile. It is great to work with CSUDH
senior administrators who are supportive of me and understand
the value of a quality Athletics Department in a quality
university.
The great rewards of the job come from
seeing our student-athletes obtain their degrees, compete at
their utmost potential and become positive contributors to our
society.
Most of all, I am thankful for my
family, my wife Carol, my daughter Shara and my son Ronnie. They
have put up with extensive travel and days away from home, and
thousands of weekends and nights at events and activities. This
award is truly one of the highlights of my 22-year career as an
Athletics Director."
Now in its 39th year, NACDA is the professional
and educational association for more than 6,100 college athletics
directors, associates, assistants and conference commissioners at
more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Mexico
and Canada. Prettymans award brings to light the
exceptional job done by athletics directors across the country,
says NACDA Executive Director Mike Cleary.
