I had the opportunity today to have lunch with several of our committed staff members who get things done behind the scenes. These are really the unsung heroes in the Athletics Department, whose daily efforts make the CSUDH Athletics Department run both smoothly and efficiently. They take their responsibilities seriously and are diligent in their efforts to provide the best possible experience for our student-athletes and coaches. They give up most of their weekends and many of their evenings as they commit to their tasks throughout the year.

Let me introduce them to you.

Theresa Cuarenta--Assistant to the Athletics Director
Theresa is the budget manager, office manager, personnel liaison and all around ambassador for the Athletics Department. She shares game administration duties and is an invaluable resource for campus and personnel issues and questions. Theresa is a part of our administrative event management staff. She is cheerful and cares a great deal about our student-athletes and coaching staff. She really has her work cut out for her right now with the current and future State of California budget crisis.

Patrick Guillen--Assistant Athletics Director
Pat is our Head Sports Information Director. Every time you see an email, web site update, newspaper article, radio and television note, this information has come from Pat's office. Pat shares game administration duties and is responsible for all CSUDH game protocol and promotions. This year Pat has taken on a new duty as part of the fund raising team in the Athletics Department. He has worked hard to identify new sources to make sustained athletics scholarships a reality in the program. Give Pat a call if you would like to get involved as a corporate or individual partner.

Lamel Harris--Assistant Athletics Director
Lamel is in charge of facility scheduling and enhancement. He works closely with the Home Depot Center as our primary liaison, the university scheduling group, and with CSUDH Physical Plant for maintenance and upkeep. Lamel is a part of the administrative event management staff and is a very popular and visible administrator to all of our student-athletes. This year Lamel has joined Pat in the efforts to raise funds for athletics scholarships. Lamel is the Director of the Annual Athletics Department TORO Golf Classic, which raises money for athletics scholarships. Give him a call if you would like to participate in this great event in June.

Lisa Mabry--Academic Advisor
Lisa just joined us this year and has the responsibility of working with student-athletes to make sure they are maintaining progress toward their degree. In addition to working closely with our student-athletes to assist them with their registration processes, she also completes projects for Ms. Julie Sandoval in the areas of compliance and eligibility. Lisa works in our office part time while also serving as one of our assistant softball coaches.

Ethan Kreiswirth and Tim McGuire
Ethan and Tim are our National Athletics Trainers Association (NATA) certified training staff. Because the training they undergo is so specialized through the certification process, it is mandatory that either Ethan or Tim must be at every home event. They care a great deal about our CSUDH student-athletes and do a great job with preventative treatments, rehabilitation and care for current injuries. They are also very adept to working with emergency situations and are available to assist the campus when called upon. Ethan is a certified CPR instructor and teaches classes for our coaches and staff so that they can be CPR certified as well. Tim is a certified strength trainer and is responsible for approving all weight training programs, while also assisting several of the teams with conditioning in the off season. We are fortunate to have such a qualified and committed training room staff.

Mel Miranda--Assistant Sports Information Director
Mel just joined us in the Sports Information Office this year after spending several years in the public relations arm of the recording industry. He has been a great addition to the Athletics Department team. Mel works closely with Pat Guillen in an effort to publicize and bring greater visibility to the CSUDH Athletics Department and its 11 sports. Mel assists with game management duties and oversees several of the student-workers who work at our events. He has produced several very nice media guides this year and has some great ideas to promote and enhance CSUDH Athletics in the future.

Julie Sandoval--Associate Athletics Director
Julie is the NCAA Senior Woman Administrator on our campus, who also serves as the NCAA compliance and eligibility officer for CSUDH. Whenever eligibility questions are asked and a prompt reply is needed, Julie is the one to field those questions. Julie is our direct link with the NCAA and the CCAA offices. She works closely with Lisa Mabry and monitors graduation rates, grade point average and academic progress. Julie is highly respected in the NCAA and is currently the Chair of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee. She has served on several national level committees for the NCAA and has brought a great level of visibility to our university. Julie also serves as Acting Athletics Director when I am away from the office.

We have some very talented men and women serving our student-athletes and coaches. You will not find a more energetic, committed, qualified and talented ensemble of men and women in any athletics department anywhere in the nation. I am fortunate to have them on my administrative leadership team as we all look forward to many great years of TORO Athletics in the future. When you see them at a game or an event, pat them on the back and thank them for their good work.

I will see you at the games.

Ron Prettyman
Athletics Director
