No. 9 Toros Men Drop Overtime Thriller in Season Opener
Toros equalize with just ten seconds remaining in regulation, but fall to Seattle University
August 26, 2004

Complete Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash.—The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer season didn’t begin on a bright note in the Emerald City, as host Seattle University handed the Toros a 3-2 loss in overtime at Championship Field on Thursday afternoon in both team’s season openers.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll, falls to 0-1 at the beginning of a three-game five-day road trip to begin the ’04 campaign in the Great Northwest.

Bobby McAlister registered a “hat trick” for the Redhawks scoring all three SU goals, including the game-winner with one minute remaining in the first overtime period. McAlister’s golden goal was a beauty, blasting a direct free kick at 98:59 around the defensive wall and just inside the far post sending the home team and their fans into a frenzy.

CSUDH, who never led in the game today, had the momentum going into overtime after Jason Koza (La Habra/La Serna HS) equalized the game with just fourteen seconds remaining. Midfielder Rick Cobb (Downey/Warren HS) sent a pass inside the box, where forward Michael Jimenez (Gardena/Bishop Montgomery HS) won the ball in the air and headed it down to the feet of Koza who found the back of the net just in front of the mouth of the goal making it 2-2.

Freshman forward Kei Kamara (Lawndale/Leuzinger HS) got the Toros on the board just past the midway point of the second half when he tied the game at 74:47. Kamara collected a rebound off Seattle goalie Jeremiah Doyle, and drilled his first collegiate goal to knot the score, 1-1.

The Toros celebration was short lived as SU’s McAlister tallied his second goal of the game less than two minutes later to give the Redhawks a 2-1 lead. That set up Koza’s late game heroics, which turned out to be all for naught after Seattle’s “Golden Goal” in overtime.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will play the second game of this three-game swing taking on Seattle Pacific University on Saturday night. First kick is set for 7 PM.
