SEATTLE, Wash.Brenda Zittels golden
goal in the second overtime period gave host Seattle University a
2-1 upset victory over No. 9-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills
Thursday afternoon at Championship Field in both teams
season opener.
Freshman Corrie Hirokawas (Torrance/N.
Torrance HS) first collegiate goal at 11:54 knotted the match at
1-1, after Seattle University took an early lead just three
minutes into the contest. Hirokawa took a through ball up the
middle from Elizabeth Arreola (Redondo Beach/Redondo Union HS) and
beat the goalie to the near post for the equalizer.
Both teams had several scoring chances over the
final 80 minutes of regulation and in the first overtime period,
but neither squad was able to take advantage until Zittels
close-range shot just two minutes into the second extra period.
CSUDH (0-1), which has a revamped squad with 19
new faces dotting the roster, started five freshman and eight new
players in all. The youth and inexperience of only playing
together for a short period of time, 19 days to be exact, showed
at times. But for the most part, the game was well played on both
sides, especially for a season opener with so many fresh faces on
the roster.
I am disappointed with the
result, said Head Coach Joe Flanagan, but very pleased
with the effort. Well put this one behind us and look
forward to playing a very good Seattle Pacific squad on Saturday.
Seattle (1-0) enjoyed a 22-16 edge in shots,
while the Toros had a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will rest on Friday
before taking on No. 22 preseason ranked Seattle Pacific
University on Saturday beginning at 4 PM at Interbay Stadium.
