BELLINGHAM, Wash.(August 30) Ryan
Hopp scored on a counterattack 6:05 into the first extra period to
give host Western Washington University a 2-1 come-from-behind
victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Monday afternoon at Civic
Stadium in Bellingham, WA.
The loss drops the Toros, ranked No. 9 in the
preseason polls, to 1-2-0 to begin the young season, while WWU
elevates to 2-1-0.
Marco Flores (Cerritos CA) gave CSUDH a 1-0
lead in the 62nd minute, when he collected a rebound off the
keeper, dribbled in and finished from ten yards out. Rick Cobb
(Downey, CA/Warren HS) was credited with the assist.
But the Vikings evened the score in the 71st
minute, when Nick Webb scored from seven yards out after taking a
low cross inside the box from Kris Pope and finding the back of
the net past diving Toro keeper, Kyle Polak.
Each team had good chances to win in
regulation, but could not get the break. In the 80th minute, Webb
forced a diving save by Polak, and four minutes later, CSUDH
forward Kei Kamara (Lawndale, CA/Leuzinger HS) skimmed the
crossbar with a bicycle kick.
Hopp then completed the come-from-behind
non-conference win just 6:05 into the extra period. After Flores
shot from 20 yards out was blocked, Cody Hagler collected and send
a 40 yard diagonal pass to Hopp, who ran onto the ball, dribbled
for 15 yards and sent his shot to the far post for the
game-winner.
Western had a 17-9 edge in shots, including an
11-5 advantage after halftime.
CSUDH will open up its 2004 home schedule with
a non-conference game against Baker University on Friday,
September 3. First kick is set for 4 PM.
