CARSON, Calif.--Rachele McDonald's
(Ventura/Ventura JC) header in the 73rd minute proved to be the
game-winner, as host Cal State Dominguez Hills held on to defeat
Grand Canyon University in non-conference action Sunday afternoon
at Toro Field.
CSUDH, ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA preseason
poll, improves to 2-2-0 while Grand Canyon is still in search of
its first victory of the year and drops to 0-4-0.
McDonald's game-winner was set up on a perfect
cross from the right flank by Michelle Sena (San Pedro/San Pedro
HS). McDonald headed in Sena's cross at 73:13 from 10-yards out
over the outstretched hands of Antelope goalie Katie Mical for the
2-1 lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, who outshot GCU 24-8
in the match, jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 23:13 when freshman
forward Corrie Hirokawa (Torrance/N. Torrance HS) registered her
second goal of the year. Hirokawa one-timed her shot at the mouth
of the goal off a nice flick from McDonald.
It looked as if the Toro defense would make the
lead stand up, but Grand Canyon was able to convert on one of
their few chances to tie the game in the 46th-minute. Olivia-Joan
Lym took a cross from inside the box from Margaret Talbot and hit
her shot to the near post for the equalizer.
Toro goalie Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary
Star of the Sea HS) made four saves to register her first win in a
CSUDH uniform. Mical, who was peppered most of the day, saved 11
shots and took the loss.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in action on
Thursday, September 9 hosting Concordia University. First kick is
set for 4 PM.
