September 9, 2004

Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.--Junior forward Francisco Corona (Compton/Compton HS) had his way today with the visiting Eagles of Concordia University, scoring five points on two goals and an assist in leading Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 4-1 non-conference win Thursday afternoon at Toro Field.

The victory elevates CSUDH above the .500-mark for the first time this year with a 3-2-0 record in the early going. The loss drops Concordia to 1-4-0 on the year.

The Toros didn't waste any time as Corona opened up the scoring early just 4:56 into the game. Corona took a beautiful pass up the middle, beat a defender then the goalie one-on-one finding the back of the net for his second goal of the year. Seventeen minutes later at the 21:49 minute mark, Jesse Graham (San Diego/Point Loma HS) was fouled inside the penalty box setting up a CSUDH penalty kick. Corona did the honors converting the shot for the 2-0 lead.

Junior midfielder Chris Ocampo (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) gave the Toros a 3-0 lead in the 61st minute taking a rebound off the keeper and toeing his shot just inside the near post. The play was set up off a nice corner kick from the boot of Adrian Szasz (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg HS). Graham got a head on the ball, that Concordia goalie Sean Forster made a nice save on. However, he couldn't maintain possession, allowing Ocampo to clean up for his first goal of the young season.

Szasz then scored a goal of his own to make it 4-0 in the 69th minute of play. Szasz took a nice low pass across the top of the box from Corona, beat a defender and the keeper to the far post for his first goal of the year.

Concordia ruined the shutout bid with a goal late in the game from Hector Najera. At 86:16, Najera took a cross inside the box and sent his shot to the far post for the 4-1 final. Cal State Dominguez Hills dominated this one outshooting the Eagles 25-9, including a 14-1 advantage in the first half. CSUDH also had a 6-0 advantage on the corner kicks.

Toro starting goalie Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley HS) earns the win in goal making one save in the first half. Austin Anderson (Odessa, TX/Permian HS) came on to start the second half and made five saves, while allowing the late goal.

CSUDH is back in action this Sunday when they will host Grand Canyon University. That game will be played in the main stadium at the Home Depot Center. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 PM.
