Toros Mount Furious Comeback in Women's Soccer Overtime Win Against Concordia
Down 2-0, CSUDH scores twice in three minutes and wins on Rachele McDonald goal in extra period
September 9, 2004

Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.--It didn't look too good for Cal State Dominguez Hills after finding themselves down by two goals almost midway through the second half to visiting Concordia University. However, the Toros scored twice over a three minute span to send the match into overtime where Rachele McDonald (Ventura/Ventura JC) knocked in the game-winner, her second in as many games, two minutes into the second extra period to propel CSUDH to the improbable victory Thursday afternoon at Toro Field.

The win is the third in a row for Cal State Dominguez Hills after dropping their first two games of the year. They now find themselves at 3-2-0, while Concordia falls to 0-2-1 to start the season.

McDonald's game-winner was set up on a corner kick from senior forward Nikki Szlak (Long Beach/Los Alamitos HS). Szlak's corner was hit nicely inside the mouth of the goal finding the feet of McDonald who one-timed her shot to the near post to complete the rally.

Concordia took the early lead scoring in the 15th minute off a corner kick from Nikki Fournier. The Eagles then took a 2-0 lead on a defensive breakdown in the second half.

In the 57th minute, CSUDH defender Sandra Lloyd's (Fountain Valley/Fountain Valley HS) attempt to clear the ball inside the box failed. Concordia took advantage and Natalie Tankersley took a rebound off the post and found the back of the net for the two-goal lead. But Cal State Dominguez Hills would begin their comeback in the 65th minute when freshman forward Tara Senff (Palos Verdes/S. Torrance HS) scored on a scramble inside the box.

Just 3:16 later, junior Melissa Sena (San Pedro/San Pedro HS) equalized with her first goal in a Toro uniform. Sena took a nice pass from the endline from Szlak who touched her shot past the goalie in the near post to send the match into overtime.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had their hands full today against a talented Eagle squad, despite outshooting them 19-9 in the match. In goal, Toro keeper Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro/Mary Star of the Sea HS) made three saves to register the win.

Vanessa Vela made two saves in the losing effort in goal for Concordia.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in action on Saturday, September 11 hosting Vanguard University. First kick is set for 12:30 at Toro Field.
