September 25, 2004

Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.--Cal State San Bernardino scored two late goals, but Cal State Dominguez Hills was able to hold on, 3-2, in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Toro Field.

The Toros are now 6-4-0 overall and an even 2-2-0 in league action. CSUSB falls to 4-3-1 overall and is now 2-1-1 in conference play.

Sophomore forward Rachel McDonald (Ventura, CA/Buena HS) put CSUDH up early in the 8th minute with her team-leading seventh goal of the year. McDonald accepted a nice through ball by midfielder Tara Senff (Palos Verdes, CA/So. Torrance HS) and hit her shot from the right top of the penalty box which hit the far post and caromed into the net for the 1-0 lead. Freshman forward Corrie Hirokawa (Torrance, CA/No. Torrance HS) put the Toros up 2-0 in the second half on a breakaway. In the 51st minute, Hirokawa galloped for twenty yards, splitting two defenders on the way, and blasted her shot from 25 yards out past San Bernardino keeper Leslie Rhodes who was off her line.

Senior Kristen Walsh (Lakewood, CA/Mayfair HS) made it 3-0 in the 82nd minute for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Walsh took a feed from Nikki Szlak (Long Beach, CA/Los Alamitos HS) and McDonald who hit a beautiful shot to the upper far netting from the left side.

But just 13 seconds later, Cal State San Bernardino cut it to 3-1 when Valerie Evans crossed a pass inside the penalty box to Michelle Lopez who knocked in her first goal of the year at 81:44.

CSUSB made it even closer four minutes later when Evans tallied her third goal of the year, taking a through pass from Lauren Williams and beat drawn out Toro keeper Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro, CA/Mary Star of the Sea HS) in the 86th minute.

But the CSUDH defense bunkered down in the final minutes to finish off the Coyotes in an important CCAA conference game.

San Bernardino outshot Cal State Dominguez Hills 16-11 in the match and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Dominguez made four saves in between the posts, while Rhodes registered three saves in the match.

The Toros are back in league play on Wednesday, September 29 hosting cross-town rival Cal State L.A. Game time is scheduled for 4 PM.
