CHICO, Calif--(October 8, 2004)--The last time
Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chico State faced each other was in
the first round of the NCAA playoffs last year, which saw the
Wildcats upset the Toros bringing an end to the 2003 campaign.
CSUDH exacted a bit of revenge Friday night in front of a raucous
crowd in Northern California, with a 5-0 drubbing over Chico in
California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
The win elevates the Toros to 9-2-2 overall and
5-0-2 in league action, while the loss drops Chico to 3-4-3 and
1-2-3 in CCAA play.
Senior midfielder Rick Cobb (Downey, CA/Warren
HS) scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 15th
minute when freshman forward Kei Kamara (Lawndale, CA/Leuzinger
HS) slotted the ball to Cobb who collected inside the 18-yard line
and beat the keeper to the far post.
In the 33rd minute, Jason Koza (La Habra, CA/La
Serna HS) gave CSUDH a 2-0 lead. Michael Jimenez (Gardena,
CA/Bishop Montgomery HS) found Koza at the far post on a beautiful
pass from the left side. Koza collected and tapped his shot to the
near post for the score.
Kamara then came up with his team-leading 12th
goal of the season taking a nice through pass from Jimenez at the
top of the box. Kamara then beat the goalie one-on-one and
finished his shot into the open net for the 3-0 lead.
The offense wasn't nearly done yet when junior
forward Francisco Corona (Compton, CA/Compton HS) made it 4-0 on a
defensive miscue in the 66th minute. Corona stole the ball near
the top of the penalty box, beat the goalie and tucked his shot to
the far post on a difficult angle for his eighth goal of the
season.
Jesse Graham (San Diego, CA/Point Loma HS)
completed the scoring barrage in the 78th minute. Graham also
stole the ball in the Wildcat defensive third, beat a defender
then the goalie to the far post for the final, 5-0.
In the game, CSUDH outshot Chico State 18-7
including 9-2 in the second half. Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach,
CA/Fountain Valley HS) and Austin Anderson (Odessa, TX/Permian HS)
split time in between the pipes for the shutout.
The Toros complete its two-game swing up North
with a game at Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday beginning at 12:30. |
