Toros Finish 16th at CSUB's Elco Invitational
October 20, 2004

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The unseasonably bad weather cooperated—barely—and the University of Hawaii-Hilo men’s golf team played through a blustery day to capture the title at the Elco, Inc. Intercollegiate tournament at Bakersfield Country Club Tuesday afternoon.

The Vulcans, ranked No. 2 in the latest Precept/GCAA NCAA Division II national rankings, shot 294 for the low round of the day and a 16-stroke victory over runner-up Cal State Bakersfield. The Roadrunners held off regional rival Western Washington by one stroke. Cal State Monterey bay and Cal State San Marcos rounded out the top five.

Cal State Dominguez Hills finished 16th in the 17-team field. The Elco field featured five of the top eight ranked teams in NCAA Division II play and eight of the top 18. In addition to Hilo, Western Washington is No. 3, CSUB is No.4, Cal State Stanislaus is No. 6 and UC San Diego is No. 8.

Swirling, gusty winds and perpetually threatening skies made Tuesday’s final round and adventure from which few escaped unscathed. Hilo’s Colin Gilliam navigated the treacherous round at one-under 71 and took individual medalist honors at five-under 211 for the tournament.

After the 94-golfer field combined to shoot 24 sub-par rounds Monday, just six players carded rounds in the red Tuesday. Scott Conway of Cal State San Marcos was the lone golfer to break 60, firing the low round of the day at 69.

Kyle Wilson led the Toro linksters on the final day, carding a three-over 75 and 226 for the tournament. L.C. Honore followed with a 78 in the final round and 232 for the tournament. Zach Zehnder (77/233), Jason Olquin (79/234) and Matt Giamberdino (86/252) rounded out the CSUDH five.
