CARSON, Calif.--Junior forward Francisco Corona
(Compton, CA/Compton HS) converted a penalty kick early into the
first overtime period as Cal State Dominguez Hills pulled out a
1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over UC San
Diego Saturday afternoon at Toro Field.
The win extends the Toros unbeaten streak to 14
games and are now 13-2-2 overall and atop the CCAA South Division
with a 9-0-2 record. UC San Diego falls to 7-3-3 overall and 6-3-2
in league play.
After a scoreless 90 minutes that saw both
sides miss scoring opportunities, CSUDH took advantage when Triton
Kevin Murray was issued a yellow card after fouling Kei Kamara
(Lawndale, CA/Leuzinger HS) inside the penalty box. Corona set up
for his third PK of the season, and converted to the right side of
the net for the game-winner at 92:36.
Cal State Dominguez Hills controlled play for
most of the game outshooting UCSD 19-6 in the match. Kyle Polak
(Huntington Beach, CA/Fountain Valley HS) got the win in between
the pipes for the Toros while having to make only one save. UC San
Diego netminder Edward Ruhland was solid all day making five saves
in the game.
CSUDH is back in league action on Monday
traveling to Cal State San Bernardino to take on the Coyotes at 3
PM. That game is a makeup from last Wednesday's match, which was
rescheduled due to heavy flooding in the Inland Empire. The Toros,
who closed out its regular home season schedule today, will then
take on Cal State L.A. and Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday and
Saturday.
