Toros Upset No. 17 UC San Diego in CCAA Women's Soccer Action, 1-0
Candace Hearn tallies game-winner in 17th minute of play to propel CSUDH
October 23, 2004

CARSON, Calif.--Candace Hearn's (Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) goal in the 17th minute, her third goal of the season and third game-winner, proved to be all the Toros defense would need as Cal State Dominguez Hills held on for a 1-0 win over visiting UC San Diego in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon at Toro Field.

The win is the fourth in a row for No. 25 CSUDH while extending its unbeaten streak to eight games. The Toros are now 12-4-1 overall and are now in a virtual tie with UC San Diego atop the CCAA South Division standings with an 8-2-1 mark. UCSD, ranked No. 17 in the latest NSCAA poll, falls to 12-2-1 overall and 8-2-1 in league play.

Cal State Dominguez Hills played one of its better first halves' of the season outshooting the Tritons 12-6 in the first 45 minutes and controlling most of the play. CSUDH finally took advantage in the 17th minute when Rachele McDonald (Ventura, CA/Buena HS) sent a beautiful through ball to Hearn's feet just inside the 18-yard line. Hearn quickly collected and blasted her shot to the upper right post for the only score of the game. UCSD had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds of the first half, but Kelly Cochran's shot went off the left post.

Both teams had a couple more chances in the second half; however, neither was able to finish them off, as the Toro defense would hold on the rest of the way. CSUDH goalie Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro, CA/Mary Star of the Sea HS) made six saves to notch her fourth shutout in a row and sixth of the season. Jamie Lautenschleger also had six saves for the Tritons in the loss.

Today's victory avenges a 1-0 loss earlier in the season to UCSD in La Jolla. That was also the last time CSUDH has lost reeling off an eight-game unbeaten streak since.

CSUDH, which completed its 2004 regular season home schedule today, will travel to Cal State San Bernardino on Monday in a rescheduled match. First kick is set for 12:30 p.m. The Toros will then close out its schedule at Cal State L.A. on Wednesday and at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
