LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. redshirt freshman
Morten Marthinsen scored his 13th goal of the season, but visiting
Cal State Dominguez Hills notched four second half goals as the
10th-ranked Toros knocked off the Golden Eagles on Wednesday
afternoon at Jesse Owens Track, 5-1.
CSUDH improves to 15-2-2, 11-0-2 CCAA, while
CSULA falls to 8-9-1, 6-6-1 CCAA.
The match was scoreless until late in the first
half when CSUDH's Kei Kamara scored his 14th goal of the season to
give the Toros a 1-0 lead at halftime. CSUDH's Edgar Guzman took
advantage of a Golden Eagle defensive miscue to give the Toros a
2-0 lead just four minutes into the second half. CSUDH led 3-0
before Marthinsen found the back of the net for Cal State L.A.,
getting passes from Anthony Ordonez and Ivan Cano to trim the gap
to 3-1.
However, CSUDH responded just 10 seconds later
as Ryan Taylor answered with a goal of his own, pushing the margin
back to three goals at 4-1. Guzman added his second goal of the
night with 8 1/2 minutes left as the visiting Toros picked up the
win. Ricky Gonzalez made five saves for CSULA in the loss while
Kyle Polak had five saves for CSUDH.
In the race for the CCAA Tournament, CSUDH
retains the top spot in the CCAA North. For Cal State L.A.,
despite the loss, the Golden Eagles are not eliminated from CCAA
Tournament consideration as UCSD's home match against Cal State
San Bernardino on Wednesday was postponed due to rain. Only Cal
State L.A., UCSD and Cal Poly Pomona remain in mathematical
contention for the final spot. Cal Poly Pomona's match at Cal
State Bakersfield was rescheduled for Thursday night, also due to
the heavy rains.
