POMONA Cal Poly Pomonas
mens soccer team was much more competitive this time around,
but the end result was the same against California Collegiate
Athletic Association power Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Broncos, who lost to the Toros, 9-0, in
September in Carson, gave a much more spirited effort on Saturday,
but still fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-1, Saturday at
Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (7-11-1, 5-8-1) concludes its 2004
season, while Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-2-2, 12-0-2) put the
finishing touches on another CCAA South Division crown. The Toros
will host the CCAA Championship Tournament beginning on Friday.
The Toros took a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by
Chris OCampo just 4:58 into the game, but the Broncos
battled the Toros on even terms until Cal State Dominguez Hills
finally got its second goal in the 69th minute. Francisco Corona,
who assisted on OCampos first goal, made a nice run
and eluded Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Gabe Ward (Sr., Chino Hills,
Damien HS) before tapping the ball into an empty net.
The Broncos had a golden opportunity to slice
the deficit in half, but Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza
JC) drilled a penalty kick just wide. A short while later, Corona
set up teammate Kei Kamara with a beautiful pass and Kamara
knocked a shot into an empty net.
The Broncos got on the board in the 79th minute
when Wallace scored his third goal of the season. Vic Perkins
(Fr., Palmdale, Highland HS) passed the ball to Andrew Bornstein
(Sr., Los Alamitos, Long Beach CC) to start the scoring play.
Bornstein then set up Wallace in the middle of the penalty area
and he drilled a shot into the net.
Kyle Polak made one save for the Toros, while
Ward and Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) combined
for five saves. Cal State Dominguez Hills held an 11-10 advantage
in shots.
It was a physical game with the two teams
combining for seven yellow cards and 45 fouls.
