Seattle, WA(November 11, 2004)The
Cal State Dominguez Hills womens soccer team made an early
exit in the NCAA playoffs with a 1-0 defeat to Seattle University
in the semifinals of the Far West Regional held at Seattle Pacific
University.
The Toros, ranked No. 19 in the latest
NSCAA/adidas poll, see their season come to an abrupt end and
finish the campaign with a 14-6-3 record.
The game was scoreless at halftime with both
sides playing evenly in the first 45 minutes. But midway through
the second period, Jasmine Wilson scored the game-winning goal at
67:36, when she took a nice cross from Ashley Porter near the top
of the box and headed her shot just inside the near post past
diving Toro goalie Mallory Dominguez (San Pedro, CA/Mary Star HS).
The Redhawk defense staved off several CSUDH
scoring opportunities in the second half. Monique Castro (San
Diego, CA/Mira Mesa HS) nearly scored the equalizer with four
minutes remaining in regulation; however, her header went wide
right.
I think Seattle played a heck of
a game, said CSUDH Head Coach Joe Flanagan. They
battled hard all night, pressuring the ball and shutting down our
chances. But I am very proud of our team and how we came together
with so many new faces on the squad. This is a great opportunity
and experience for us to learn from, and I know the future is
bright.
The game brought to an end the collegiate
playing careers of two seniors in Kristen Walsh (Lakewood,
CA/Mayfair HS) and Nikki Szlak (Long Beach, CA/Los Alamitos HS).
But the 2005 season brings much promise with 13 underclassmen
dotting the roster.
