Carson, CA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills
campus played host to the NCAA On Campus earlier this
month, a television show produced by the NCAA and Fox Sports Net
featuring various topics of interest centered on NCAA
student-athletes and NCAA issues. This segment, taped at several
campus locales during the California Collegiate Athletic
Associations Mens and Womens Soccer
Championships, will air nationally on Wednesday, November 24,
2004, at 11:30 a.m. on FSN West, and again on Thursday, November
25, 2004, at 3:00 p.m. on FSN West 2.
Host Patrick ONeal, an anchor on FSNs
Headline News Service and One Show, and his
three-person crew filmed pieces at many on-campus locations during
the conference championships, and interviewed a Toro senior from
both the mens and womens soccer teams. In one segment
titled Ask Myles, FSN interviewed Kristen Walsh as she
asked NCAA President Myles Brand a question about the NCAA and its
policies. In another segment, ONeal gets a glimpse into the
personality of Ryan Taylor as the two exchange quips about various
topics outside of NCAA athletics, including the Spice Girls.
The creation of NCAA On Campus
marks the first time in history that the NCAA has had its own
television show. As part of the NCAA's 11-year bundled rights
television agreement with CBS, NCAA On Campus will
provide an additional platform to feature the outstanding academic
and athletic achievements of Division I, II and III
student-athletes and a forum to explain collegiate topics and
issues in more detail.
NCAA On Campus will highlight the
Association's commitment to the education and welfare of the
student-athlete and inform the public of student-athlete abilities
on and off the competition field. The show will also educate the
public on all aspects of the NCAA and provide additional exposure
for member colleges and universities.
The CBS bundled rights agreement has
provided the NCAA with a number of tremendous new platforms to
showcase the Association, one of which is the monthly show, NCAA
On Campus, said Dennis Cryder, NCAA vice-president
of branding, broadcasting and promotions.
There are a number of public
misperceptions about who the NCAA is and what role it serves as
an association. NCAA On Campus will help us illustrate, through
the voices and faces of NCAA student-athletes, how the
collegiate academic and athletic opportunities prepare these
talented individuals for life, Cryder said.
The NCAA is a membership-run nonprofit
association of colleges and universities committed to supporting
academic and athletic opportunities for 360,000 student-athletes
competing in 22 sports at nearly 1,000 member colleges and
universities. The NCAA conducts 87 championships each year where
more than 44,000 student-athletes compete to be national
collegiate champions.
Fox Sports Net reaches more than 82.2 million
homes through its network of 21 regional sports channels. FSN,
based in Los Angeles, serves as the cable TV home to 66 of the 80
Major League Baseball (MLB), National Hockey League (NHL) and
National Basketball Association (NBA) teams based in the United
States, and produces over 4,700 live events each year.
