LOS ANGELES -- The visiting Cal State Dominguez
Hills women's basketball team held the Golden Eagles to just 24
percent shooting from the field as the Toros knocked off Cal State
L.A. on Saturday night in the Eagles Nest, 60-50.
CSUDH improves to 5-5, 3-1 CCAA, while Cal
State L.A. falls to 3-8, 0-4 CCAA.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the first five
points of the game, getting a three-pointer by Jessica Liang and a
layup from Alana Bailey in the early going. CSULA tied the game at
5-5 on a Regina Baucum jumper, but the visiting Toros went on an
8-0 run and scored 15 of the game's next 17 points, including a
pair of Tameka Blue three-pointers, as CSUDH took a 20-7 lead
midway through the period.
Cal State L.A. rallied back, hitting 12-of-15
free throws while holding the Toros to just four points over the
final 3 1/2 minutes of the period. A putback at the buzzer by
CSUDH's Adiana Vega-Howard gave CSUDH a 32-27 lead at
intermission.
CSULA's Oda scored the first six points of the
second half by herself as the Golden Eagles took their first lead
of the game at 33-32 after three Oda free throws with 18:54 left
in the game. However, CSULA went cold from the field, hitting just
one bucket over the next eight minutes as CSUDH opened up a 45-35
lead.
Cal State L.A. closed to within four points at
45-41 after back-to-back three-pointers by Stacia Stricker and
Fatimah Stokley with 10:41 to go, but once again CSULA struggled
from the floor as the Golden Eagles hit just one field goal the
rest of the way. Cal State Dominguez Hills also would not score
from the field in the game's final five minutes, but the Toros hit
5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to pick up the win.
Oda was the lone Golden Eagle in double figure
scoring while Charmaine Utz added nine points and a game-high 11
rebounds. CSUDH was paced by Michelle Kribell with 11 points and
six boards while Blue added 10 points and four assists off the
bench.
The Toros take a northern swing next weekend,
playing first at Cal State Stanislaus Friday and Chico State
Saturday.
