CHICO, Calif. Karen Shirley buried the
game-winning jumper with nine seconds remaining to lift the Cal
State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team to a 73-71 victory
over 24th-ranked Chico State Saturday night at Acker Gym. With the
win, the Toros move into a first-place tie with Chico State atop
the CCAA.
Kim Abts' potential game-winning 3-pointer
clanged off the front iron and the Wildcats (11-2, 5-1 CCAA)
absorbed their first CCAA loss of the season and snapped a
five-game winning streak. It was the first loss for Chico State
since losing to then No. 4 Seattle Pacific on Dec. 18.
Every Wildcat starter was charged with at least
three turnovers as they committed a season-high 27 turnovers,
which led directly to 17 Toro points. Dominguez Hills finished the
game with 16 turnovers.
Tameka Blue led Dominguez Hills (7-5, 5-1 CCAA)
with six steals, while Octavia Askew notched five steals. Freshman
Alana Bailey led the Toros with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Shirley finished with 11 points, but was 3-of-15 from the floor
prior to her game-winning shot.
Haley Ford buoyed Chico State's offense with
eight points, nine rebounds, and a career high six steals. Amber
Simmons led the Wildcats with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and
also pulled down seven rebounds. Maija Panttaja finished with 16
points and eight rebounds.
The Toros have a homestand next weekend, first
hosting UC San Diego Friday, then Cal State San Bernardino
Saturday.
