CHICO, Calif. Karen Shirley buried the game-winning jumper with nine seconds remaining to lift the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team to a 73-71 victory over 24th-ranked Chico State Saturday night at Acker Gym. With the win, the Toros move into a first-place tie with Chico State atop the CCAA.

Kim Abts' potential game-winning 3-pointer clanged off the front iron and the Wildcats (11-2, 5-1 CCAA) absorbed their first CCAA loss of the season and snapped a five-game winning streak. It was the first loss for Chico State since losing to then No. 4 Seattle Pacific on Dec. 18.

Every Wildcat starter was charged with at least three turnovers as they committed a season-high 27 turnovers, which led directly to 17 Toro points. Dominguez Hills finished the game with 16 turnovers.

Tameka Blue led Dominguez Hills (7-5, 5-1 CCAA) with six steals, while Octavia Askew notched five steals. Freshman Alana Bailey led the Toros with 19 points and nine rebounds. Shirley finished with 11 points, but was 3-of-15 from the floor prior to her game-winning shot.

Haley Ford buoyed Chico State's offense with eight points, nine rebounds, and a career high six steals. Amber Simmons led the Wildcats with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and also pulled down seven rebounds. Maija Panttaja finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Toros have a homestand next weekend, first hosting UC San Diego Friday, then Cal State San Bernardino Saturday.
