CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills nearly
pulled off the upset against Cal State San Bernardino, but
eventually succumbed to the No. 19 Coyotes, 92-87, in California
Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday night in the
Torodome.
CSUDH was down by just three points with 1:16
left in the game after freshman guard Mike Steed (Antelope,
CA/Center HS) buried a short jumper to pull the Toros within
83-80. But CSUSB (11-3, 6-2 CCAA) would convert 9-of-10 free
throws in the waning seconds, seven of them from Trenell Eddings,
while CSUDH (4-11, 3-5 CCAA) would miss three shots when it
counted down the stretch.
The Toros found themselves down 39-30 at the
break despite outshooting the Coyotes in the first half, mostly in
part to the rebound advantage San Bernardino enjoyed in the first
20 minutes of the game. CSUSB pulled down 14 offensive boards
leading to 17 second chance points.
After the intermission, Cal State Dominguez
Hills pulled it together playing better defensively on the boards.
However, the shots weren't falling for the Toros in the second
stanza despite putting up 42 of them, but only making 40% from the
floor. CSUSB meanwhile shot a blazing 64% from the field in the
second half.
Cal State Dominguez Hills trimmed it down to
90-87 with twelve seconds left in the game after a Les Norman
(Lebanon, IL/Coppin State) trey. But Eddings gave the Coyotes a
five point lead after a pair of free throws with five seconds
left. Norman's desperation three-pointer was off accounting for
the final margin.
Eddings led all scorers with 30 points, 19 of
them coming at the charity stripe.
Kenneth Sims finished with 15 points for Cal
State San Bernardino while Chris Davis and Brian Pruitt chipped in
with 11. Davis, Pruitt and James Perkins paced the squad with
eight rebounds.
Norman led the Toros with 26 points on the
night going 8-for-22 from the field. Norman tied Eric Crookshank
(Vallejo, CA/Chabot JC) for the team lead with eight rebounds.
Saul Lankster (Long Beach, CA/Compton Centennial HS) finished with
14 points, and Phillip Givens (Los Angeles, CA/Manual Arts HS) and
Quishawn Harrell (Long Beach, CA/LB Wilson HS) also scored in
double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Cal State Dominguez Hills returns to league
action this Wednesday hosting Cal Poly Pomona. The game will be
broadcast live on the internet through
Waldcast.net, with Ronnie
Wald calling the play-by-play. First tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
