January 26, 2005

Complete Box Score

Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills freshman Alana Bailey (Altadena, CA/John Muir HS) poured in 18 points to lead three Toros in double-figure scoring, but visiting Cal Poly Pomona’s Candice Allen dropped 38 points on the Toro defense, including 21 after intermission, as the No. 19-ranked Broncos survived a double-overtime thriller in taking an 85-78 decision Wednesday night in the Torodome.

With the loss, the Toros’s first in six games, CSUDH falls to 9-6, 7-2 CCAA, while the Broncos forge a tie for the conference lead, improving to 12-4, 7-2 CCAA.

Allen was on fire in the first half, sinking six shots to the tune of 17 points. After a sluggish start by both teams, the Broncos took control by outscoring the Toros 7-0, giving CPP a 24-17 lead with 4:01 remaining in the first half. A Brandi Fletcher 3-pointer and an Allen jumper would give the Broncos a 30-21 lead entering the half.

After intermission, the Broncos kept the heat on, taking a 38-23 lead with 3:12 elapsed in the second half. The Toros, however, would find their offensive rhythm, going on a 14-0 run to take a 39-38 lead with 12:16 left in regulation.

Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) and Octavia Askew (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham HS) were huge, each converting two buckets in the run. With momentum on its side, CSUDH continued to keep the lead, but wouldn’t take more than a four-point advantage the rest of the way. CPP’s Allen made CSUDH pay, draining a 3-pointer with 2:19 left in regulation to give the Broncos a 64-63 lead. After an Allen lay-up would increase the CPP lead to 66-63, an Askew bomb would tie the game at 66-66, sending the contest into overtime.

In the extra frame, a Bailey bucket would give the Toros a 68-66 lead, but the Broncos would answer, knotting the game on a Fletcher jumper. CSUDH would take two more leads in the first five-minute session, but couldn’t put the pesky Broncos away. With the Toros up 73-71, Allen answered again with a jumper at the 0:23 mark, sending the game into double overtime.

In the second overtime, a Shyrah Thomas 3-pointer opened the scoring for the Broncos, which gave them newfound momentum. The Toros would trim the Bronco lead to 78-77 on two Blue foul shots, but jumpers by Fletcher and Allen, and two foul shots by Allen would increase CPP’s lead to 84-78 with 0:17 left. The Toros would find no miracles on this night, as a Fletcher foul shot closed the scoring, giving the Broncos a hard-fought 85-78 victory.

Askew finished with 17 points, while Blue chipped in 13 in the loss. Bailey contributed 11 rebounds, giving her the Toros’ only double-double on the evening. For the Broncos, Allen finished with 38 points to lead all scorers, pulling down 12 boards, while Fletcher contributed 12 points and 11 boards. As a team, the Broncos outshot the Toros 58.3% to 27.3% in the overtime periods, giving them the decisive stat of the night.

The Toros travel to Seaside, CA, for a Friday game against Cal State Monterey Bay, before returning home the weekend of February 11-12, for four-consecutive conference games, beginning with crosstown-rival Cal State L.A.
