Toros Win Baseball League Opener Over Cal State San Bernardino, 17-9
CSUDH hits three homeruns including a grand slam by Corso to cruise in CCAA opener

CARSON, Calif.--(February 4, 2005)--Cal State Dominguez Hills flexed its power using three homeruns, including a grand slam by Ian Corso, to win its league opener over Cal State San Bernardino, 17-9, Friday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Toro Field.

CSUSB (1-1, 0-1 CCAA) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after two innings, but CSUDH plated two runs in the bottom of the second on Ricky Eda's (Palos Verdes/Peninsula HS) first homerun of the year, a two-run shot to right field making it 3-2 Coyotes.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-0, 1-0 CCAA) took the lead for good in the third inning pushing across four runs on four hits, including freshman catcher Martin Conde's (Los Angeles/Fremont HS) first collegiate homerun, a two-run blast over the left field fence which chased San Bernardino starter Eric Foor (0-1) and gave CSUDH a 6-3 lead.

The Coyotes made it close in the fourth with two more runs on a run scoring groundout followed by an RBI double from Aaron Jimenez to make it 6-5.

But the Toros jumped all over reliever Chris Hayes in the fourth scoring four more runs, highlighted by Eda's two-run double to right field. Conde's RBI groundout gave CSUDH a 10-5 lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills broke open the game in the fifth with six more runs to forge a 16-5 lead. The big hit in the inning came from Corso who connected on Hayes' first offering with the bases loaded and sent his first homer of the year way over the right center field wall making it 14-5. Two batters later, Conde registered his fourth and fifth runs batted in with a single to center field for the 16-5 lead.

CSUSB got two runs back in the sixth and solo runs in the seventh and ninth innings to account for the final, 17-9. Corso and Conde led the Toros offensive outburst with five RBI. Eda, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs, had four RBI. Houston Hernandez (La Mirada/St. Paul HS) also checked in with three hits in four trips to the plate. CSUDH starter Ryan Owen (Riverside/W. Torrance HS) was the pitcher of record going the first 4.0 innings allowing five runs on five hits and striking out two. Dustin Gober (Long Beach/Lakewood HS) pitched the fifth and sixth giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits. Fred Medina (Santa Ana/Century HS) picked up the save tossing the final three innings of the game allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three.

Aaron Rice, Billy Ermert, Mario Mancha, Mark Mancha and Aaron Jimenez all had two hits apiece to lead the 13-hit attack for the Coyotes. Lopez finished with a team-high three RBI.

Foor suffered the loss going the first 2.2 innings allowing six runs on six hits. Four CSUSB reliever's combined to allow 11 runs over the final 5.1 innings.

These same two teams will continue this three-game weekend series with a twinbill tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m.
