ROHNERT PARK, Calif- J.T. Tipton recorded his
ninth double-double of the year as Sonoma State held off a furious
Cal State Dominguez Hills rally to defeat the Toros 69-66 on
Friday night in men's basketball action at Seawolf Gym.
The Seawolves improved to 11-7, 8-3 CCAA with
the win while CSUDH falls to 5-13, 4-7 CCAA.
The game looked like a rout early as SSU hit
eight three-pointers in the first half to cruise to a 36-27 lead.
The margin was pushed to as many as 15 in the second half (at
50-35, 13:08 left) before the Toros began chipping into the lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills went on an 18-7 run over the next five
minutes to cut the lead to four at 57-53 with 8:42 left.
Slowly, the Toros continued to reel the
Seawolves in and with a pair of free throws by Les Norman with
just over three minutes to go, CSUDH tied the score at 64. The
score was tied again at 66 before J.T. Tipton hit one of two free
throws to give SSU a 67-66 lead with :30 to go. After a missed
jump shot by CSUDH's Phillip Givens on the other end of the floor,
Paige Dumont came up with a huge defensive rebound. He was fouled
and hit both his free throws to put SSU up three with :09
remaining. The Toros got one chance to tie, but a Quenton Harvey
three-pointer rimmed out before the buzzer rang.
Tipton finished the night with 16 points and 14
rebounds. Vince Inglima continued with his hot stroke as he hit
four trey's en route to 14 points. Dumont came up with three
blocks and eight points.
Quenton Harvey was the game's leading scorer,
finishing with 19 points for the Toros. Phillip Givens added 18
and Les Norman finished with 12 points and eight boards.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow night
when they host Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 pm. Cal State Dominguez
Hills takes on San Francisco State.
