CARSON, Calif.--(February 5, 2005)--Visiting
Cal State San Bernardino used solid pitching in the first game
followed with a 19-hit attack in the nightcap to complete the
California Collegiate Athletic Association twinbill sweep over Cal
State Dominguez Hills by scores of 3-0 and 15-6 Saturday afternoon
at Toro Field.
In the early game, the CSUSB (3-1, 2-1 CCAA)
pitching outdueled the Toros tossing a three-hit shutout. Kyle
Holden (1-0) went the first 4.2 innings scattering all three hits.
Holden cruised through the first four innings and retired 10 of
the first 12 batters he faced. Douglas Brandt and Derek Baker
combined for the final 4.1 innings of hitless relief. Baker
notched the save pitching a 1-2-3 ninth.
Michael Rossano provided all the scoring punch
the Coyotes would need with a 2-run double in the second inning.
Mark Mancha knocked in an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI
single.
CSUDH (2-2, 1-2 CCAA) had their chances,
including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, but could not get
the timely hit.
Chris Borchers (0-1) was the tough-luck loser
for the Toros going the first 7.0 innings allowing three runs on
six hits. Art Romero, David Leyva and James Dodson pitched the
final two innings of one-hit ball.
In the nightcap, San Bernardino got 19 hits
over seven innings to fuel the sweep. CSUSB jumped out to a 4-0
lead in the first inning utilizing four CSUDH errors and two hits.
The Coyotes tacked on two more runs in the second on RBI singles
by Aaron Rice and Billy Ermert.
Cal State Dominguez Hills got two runs back in
the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring
single by Jose Montes. But the Coyotes broke the game open pushing
across five runs in the fourth, including a solo homerun by Mark
Mancha and RBI triples by Jake Puckett and Ermert to take an 11-3
lead.
CSUSB put up two more runs in the sixth and
seventh innings, before the Toros plated three in the bottom of
the seventh for the final margin of 15-6.
Aaron Rice led the team with three RBI, while
Ermert collected four hits. Michael Rossano also finished with
three hits going 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.
James Sinkes (1-0) pitched the first four
innings allowing three runs, two earned, and seven hits to get the
win. Jared Eichelberger tossed the final three innings of the game
to notch the save. Eichelberger allowed three unearned runs on
four hits.
Matt Hopps (0-1) suffered the loss going only
three innings while allowing eight runs, five earned, on nine
hits.
The Toros were led at the plate by four players
with two hits apiece.
CSUDH will host their alumni tomorrow at Toro
Field beginning at noon. The team will then resume play on Tuesday
at Vanguard University. First pitch against the Lions is scheduled
for 2 PM.
