Chivas Release dated Feb. 4, 2005
CARSON, Calif. (Friday, February 4, 2005) -
Club Deportivo Chivas USA added former Toro netminder Javier
Barragan (Long Beach, CA/LB Jordan HS) to its roster last Friday
in Major League Soccer's 2005 Supplemental Draft, in which the
league's 12 teams participated Friday morning via teleconference.
With its first pick (second overall), Chivas
USA didn't have to look very far choosing 24-year-old goalkeeper
Javier Barragan. The 5-foot-11 netminder played at Cal State
Dominguez Hills during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. He was first
observed by the Red-and-White's coaching staff during the "Sangre
Nueva" (New Blood) tryouts held by Chivas USA in late October
2004 in the city of Baldwin Park, California.
Barragan was a two-year starter for the Toros
after transferring to the Carson campus from Cal State L.A.,
During the 2002 and 2003 seasons, Barragan started 38 of 43
matches, registering an impressive 148 saves. During his 2003
campaign, Barragan led the entire California Collegiate Athletic
Association (CCAA) with a 0.62 goals against average. An All-CCAA
selection in 2002, Barragan finished his CSUDH career with 18
shutouts and 33 wins which rank him third in the all-time Toro
record books.
"What a feeling to get the
opportunity to play professionally," says Barragan. "All
the time of training and working out has finally paid off. To be
able to put on the Red-and-White and play in front of their
incredible fans will be a great feeling. Chivas has so much
tradition. I can't wait."
Barragan is expected to join his new teammates
after Chivas USA returns from Guadalajara, where Thomas Rongen's
men are currently training at the University of Guadalajara's "La
Primavera" complex.
