COSTA MESA, Calif.--(February 8, 2005)--Senior
outfielder Jose Montes drove in three runs on three hits to lead
Cal State Dominguez Hills to an 11-8 non-conference win over
Vanguard University Tuesday afternoon in Costa Mesa.
Down 3-2, CSUDH (3-2) pushed across four runs
in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. In the fourth,
David Leos and Pedro Gutierrez drove in runs with RBI singles, and
Montes came up with two outs and drove in two more on a deep
double to straight-away centerfield to make it 6-3.
Cal State Dominguez Hills added a run in the
fifth and three more in the seventh on a Isidro Perez RBI hit and
a two-run single by Houston Hernandez to go up 10-4.
Vanguard University (2-4) cut the Toro lead to
10-8 with two runs in each the seventh and eighth inning, however,
freshman catcher Martin Conde gave CSUDH an insurance run with his
second homer of the season, a leadoff shot to deep leftfield, in
the top Elmer Rivas came on in the ninth, striking out one to earn
his first save of the season. Toros reliever Dustin Gober (1-0)
was credited with the win after tossing a scoreless third, fourth
and fifth inning. CSUDH starter Ryan Owen went the first two
innings allowing three runs, none earned, on two hits and struck
out two.of the ninth.
Montes led the team at the plate going 3-for-4
with three RBI. Senior first baseman Chris Martinez collected two
hits, while Perez and Hernandez drove in two runs apiece.
CSUDH will be back in action traveling to the
Valley of the Sun to take on Grand Canyon University in a
three-game series beginning on Friday. First pitch is scheduled
for 7 PM. The series will conclude on Saturday with a twinbill
