Toros Men Snap Two-Game Skid, Beat Cal State L.A. 77-70
Les Norman scores 28 points in CCAA victory over Golden Eagles

CARSON, Calif—(February 11, 2005)—Les Norman (Lebanon, IL/Coppin St.) scored a game-high 28 points to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 77-70 win over cross-town rival Cal State L.A. in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Friday night at the Torodome.

CSUDH (6-14, 5-8 CCAA) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and took advantage after Cal State L.A. came out ice cold in the opening minutes missing its first 11 shots of the game.

Cal State Dominguez Hills led by as much as 12 points after a three-pointer by Phillip Givens (Los Angeles/Manual Arts HS) with 8:36 left in the half, 22-10. However, the Golden Eagles answered back holding the Toros to four points over the next six minutes, while going on an 18-6 run to take its first lead of the game, 28-26, after a trey by Ivan Jackson.

Alexous Scruggs (Los Angeles/Crenshaw HS) tied the game in the Toros next possession, 28-28, then held CSULA to a bucket in the final 2:08 to take a four-point lead into the locker room, 34-30.

The game was tied twice in the first seven minutes of the second period, before the Toros went on a 9-3 spurt to take a 56-49 margin after a pair of free throws by Norman with 9:38 remaining.

CSULA (1-19, 0-13 CCAA) answered right back and trimmed the lead down to 56-55 after a running jumper by Jon Folonis with 8:37 left. But Cal State Dominguez Hills answered right back and built an eight-point lead aided by five Norman free throws to make it 66-58 with 5:26 left in the game.

The Toros were up by as many as nine points, 71-62, after Norman’s first trey of the game with 3:44 left. Cal State L.A. would not get any closer than five points in the final three minutes as CSUDH held on for the league win.

Not known as a great free throw shooting team, CSUDH made its final 11 charity attempts in the final eight minutes of the game to help seal the victory. For the game, the Toros finished 24 of 31 from the line.

After Norman’s 28, Givens followed with 14 points and a game-high 11 boards. Quenton Harvey (Compton/Cleveland HS) chipped in with 10 points on the night.

For Cal State L.A., Jon Folonis led the squad with 24 points and a team-high six rebounds. Gene Myvett contributed with 19, and Ivan Jackson came off the bench to tally 13 points on the evening.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in action tomorrow night in the Torodome and looking to snap an 11-year losing streak to Cal State Bakersfield. First tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
