Chico State (16-6, 11-4 CCAA) took a 47-35 lead
into halftime after shooting the lights out in the first half. The
Wildcats hit a blazing 65% of their baskets in the first 20
minutes, led by 11 first half points off the bench by Van Eck.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-15, 6-9 CCAA) came
out of intermission and trimmed the lead down to seven points,
49-40, at 18:23 after a layup by Phillip Givens (Los Angeles,
CA/Manual Arts HS). However, Chico would answer using a 13-7 run
over the next seven minutes to take a 60-47 lead with 11:54
remaining.
The Wildcats kept the Toros at arm's length the
rest of the way, with CSUDH never getting any closer than seven
points, and that came in the final seconds on a Quenton Harvey
(Compton, CA/Cleveland HS) three-pointer.
Chico State got a lot of help from its bench
scoring 46 points en route to winning its seventh game in a row.
CSUDH's reserves, meanwhile, were only able to contribute eight
points off the bench.
After Van Eck, the Wildcats got 14 points from
Scott Land and 11 points from center Will Bonner. Four Chico
players tied for the team lead with three rebounds apiece.
For CSUDH, Harvey led four players in double
digit scoring with 20 points. Les Norman (Lebanon, IL/Coppin St.)
poured in 16 points, and Alexous Scruggs (Los Angeles, CA/Crenshaw
HS) and Givens chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively. Senior
forward Eric Crookshank (Vallejo, CA/Hogan HS) led the team on the
glass with a game-high seven rebounds.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in league
action tomorrow night hosting Cal State Stanislaus. First tip is
scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
