scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead visiting Cal
State Stanislaus to a 79-77 overtime victory over Cal State
Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association

Phillip Givens scored 13
points, including a team-high three treys, but it wasn't
enough as the Toros fell in overtime to Cal State Stanislaus.

The Toros (7-16, 6-10 CCAA) took a 14-point
lead into the break, 37-23, using a balanced attack with seven of
the eight players seeing action scoring, led by Phillip Givens'
eight points.
Cal State Dominguez Hills came out flat in the
second half during the first nine minutes allowing Stanislaus to
get back in the game. The Warriors, meanwhile, came out strong and
when Deone Mitchell hit a three-pointer from the corner, it capped
a 26-12 run to begin the second half and knotted the score, 49-49
with 10:59 left.
Cal State Stanislaus (5-18, 3-13 CCAA) took the
lead at 8:52 after Kavin Young completed a three-point play for a
54-53 lead.
Both teams traded baskets over the next six
minutes before Givens knocked down a three-pointer with 1:09 on
the clock giving CSUDH a 68-65 lead. But Stanislaus answered right
back in their next possession hitting a trey to tie it once again,
68-68 with :46 seconds left.
Quenton Harvey came back in the next possession
for the Toros, getting the bucket and was fouled with 27.2 seconds
left. Harvey hit the free throw giving the Toros a 71-68 lead. But
Marcus Martinez sent the game into overtime hitting a
three-pointer with twenty seconds left for the Warriors.
In overtime, the Toros jumped out to a
three-point lead, 75-72 at 4:13. The Warriors tied it on a
three-pointer by Casey Harrington at 3:35. Harvey's jumper at 1:03
gave the Toros its last lead of the game, 77-75.
Young came back for CSUS and hit a shot with
:43 seconds left to tie it and Jamall Simmons running jumper from
the baseline with four seconds left for the win. Cal State
Dominguez Hills had a chance to send it into a second overtime
period with just 0.7 seconds left on a lob play, but Givens dunk
went in and out to end the game.
Cameron Quick added 10 points off the bench for
the Warriors to go along with Young's double double. No other
player was in double figures.
For the Toros, Les Norman led the team with 17
points and tied for the team lead with eight boards. Eric
Crookshank followed with 15 points and eight rebounds. Givens and
Harvey had 13, while Quishawn Harrell contributed with 11 off the
bench.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in league
action Friday night at league-leader Cal State San Bernardino.
First tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
