SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State San Bernardino
outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills by 13 points in the second
half Friday night to defeat the Toros, 66-56, as senior 6-9 center
Chris Davis produced his best of the season, 20 points and 11
rebounds.
Davis scored 18 of his points and collected
eight rebounds in the second half as the Coyotes (19-4, 14-3 CCAA)
stormed back from a 29-26 halftime deficit to take control of the
game in the final nine minutes, expanding a five-point lead at
48-43 to a 11-point lead at 54-43 with a 6-0 run as the clock
wound down to five minutes.
Point guard Trenell Eddings had 16 points and
five assists, 12 points coming in the second half as the Coyotes
rang up 40. Guard Les Norman, the team's leading scorer at 17
points a game, was held to just six points in 20 minutes of play.
Phillip Givens led the Toros (7-17, 6-11 CCAA)
with 16 points while Alexous Scruggs came off the bench to add 12
as the Toros record slipped to 7-17 overall and 6-11 in the
conference.
Neither team shot particularly well. The Toros
were just 20 of 57 from the field (35 percent) and hit just three
of 19 from beyond the arc (16 percent) and made just 13 of 24 free
throws (54 percent).
The Coyotes shot 43 percent (25 of 58) on
Associated Students Inc. Homecoming Night in front of 1,173 fans,
but were just 58 percent from the foul line (11 of 19).
Dominguez Hills forged a 13-10 lead at the
10:20 mark of the first half on a three-pointer by Scruggs and led
again 19-16 on a layup by Scruggs. The Coyotes went ahead 21-19
before the Toros pulled ahead by six at 29-23 on a jumper by
Givens. Ken Sims hit a three for the Coyotes to narrow the
halftime lead to three at 29-26.
CSUSB outscored the Toros 10-4 in the opening
minutes of the second half and were never headed thereafter.
The Toros play at UC San Diego Saturday night.
