SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State San Bernardino
withstood a late rally from California Collegiate Athletic
Association leader Cal State Dominguez Hills to beat the Toros,
65-59, in Coussoulis Arena Friday night.
In beating the Toros, ranked No. 3 in the West
Region, the No. 9-ranked Coyotes showed they want a shot at a
berth in the regional as they improved to 18-6 on the season and
12-5 in the CCAA while the Toros retained at least a one game lead
in the conference at 14-3, 16-7 overall.
Junior guard Tamara Thomas scored 19 points,
sinking a jumper and six free throws in the final 1:09 and making
a steal in the final seconds to secure the win for the Coyotes.
Senior center Sequoia Williams had 18 points and eight rebounds.
Senior Joyce Proctor chipped in 10 points.
Junior point guard Tameka Blue led the Toros
with 13 points and six assists while freshman Alana Bailey and
Michelle Kribell each had 12 points. The Toros outshot the Coyotes
44 percent to 39 percent from the field but the Coyotes converted
24 free throws to just eight for the visiting Toros.
Thomas scored nine points and Williams eight as
the Coyotes forged a 37-28 halftime lead, but the Toros began to
cut into the margin, reducing the CSUSB lead to three on more than
one occasion but each time CSUSB responded.
The Coyotes led 57-50 with 2:49 left when Blue
nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to four and Brittney
Blankenship made a layup with 39 seconds left to narrow the lead
to 60-57. The Toros were forced to foul Coyotes players, and
Thomas was six for six down the stretch to ice the game.
