CARSON, Calif.--(February 26, 2005)--Tony
Alcantar hit two homeruns and Colton Daines drove in seven runs on
the day to lead Sonoma State to a California Collegiate Athletic
Association doubleheader sweep over host Cal State Dominguez Hills
Saturday afternoon by scores of 9-3 and 18-1.
In the early game, Toros' starter Ryan Owen's
(1-2) first pitch of the game was sent over the leftfield wall by
Carlos Pasillas. SSU scored two more in the inning to take a quick
3-0 lead in the first.
CSUDH got a run back in the second inning, but
the Seawolves tacked on two more in the fourth and two more in the
sixth for a 7-1 lead. Alcantar then connected for his first
homerun of the day in the seventh, a two-run shot deep to
leftfield giving Sonoma a 9-1 cushion. Alcantar finished the game
2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI.
Ricky Eda (Palos Verdes/Peninsula HS) accounted
for the final margin with a 2-run homer to right field, his second
of the year, in the bottom of the ninth. Ryan Owen (Riverside/W.
Torrance HS) lasted 4.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits.
The junior lefty walked four batters and struck out four. Reliever
Elmer Rivas (Los Angeles/Los Angeles CC) tossed 2.1 innings giving
up four runs, two earned, on five hits. Freshman Michael Brown
(Santa Cruz/Santa Cruz HS) worked the final 2.0 scoreless innings.
SSU starter Justin Wiley (2-0) went the first
5.0 innings allowing only one run on four hits to gain the win.
Abel Romero pitched the final 4.0 innings of effective relief to
get his first save.
In the nightcap, it was all Seawolves pounding
out 21 hits in the game and crossing the plate 18 times. SSU (9-7,
6-3 CCAA) scored in every inning to go on for the 18-1 rout.
After three innings, Sonoma State led 6-1
before Alcantar belted his second homer of the day, and fourth of
the series, en route to a four-run fourth inning to give them a
10-1 lead. The Seawolves tacked on two more in the fifth, four
more in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the 18-1 final.
Colton Daines led SSU in the second game with
six RBI going 4-for-5 at the plate. Matt Frick knocked in four
runs on four hits, including a homerun, while Nate Durham-Hammer
drove in three runs on three hits. Sonoma starter Christopher
Herrera (2-0) was sharp going the distance to earn his second win
of the year. Herrera went 7.0 complete allowing one run on four
hits while striking out eight.
Starter James Dodson (0-1) took the loss for
the Toros (6-6, 2-4 CCAA) going only 1.1 innings allowing four
runs on five hits. Three other CSUDH relievers were tagged for 14
runs over the final 5.2 innings.
This four-game series will conclude tomorrow
with a single game. First pitch is slated for 11 AM.
