LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore Mark Lewkowitz hit a three-pointer as time expired to give the UC San Diego men’s basketball team a 74-72 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night in RIMAC Arena on the campus of UCSD. The Tritons rallied from a 16-point second half deficit for the victory, improving to 11-13 overall and 7-11 in CCAA play while the Toros fell to 7-17 overall and 6-11 in league action. The win also avenges an 18-point loss to CSUDH earlier the season in Carson, Calif.

Lewkowitz, who finished with nine points and eight assists on the night, took a pass from Parker Berling deep in the left corner, quickly squared his shoulders and got off the shot just before time expired. A rowdy student section stormed the court after the jumper touched nearly every angle of the rim before falling through.

The shot capped an 18-2 run over the final seven minutes of the game in which UCSD made four of its 10 three-pointers in the game. Robby Peters, who hit two of those long range jumpers during the run finished with 14 points while Clint Allard, who hit the other three-pointer during the last seven minutes, finished with 13. Freshman Andrew Hatch added a game-high 17 points while Berling chipped in with 13.

Quenton Harvey scored 17 points to lead the CSUDH offense, followed by Norman Les and Saul Lankster who scored 14 and 11 points, respectively. Eric Crookshank was limited to three points on the night.

UCSD trailed by 10 at intermission as the Toros hit 9-of-15 shots from the arc in the first half en route to scoring 49 first half points. The Tritons calmed the game down in the second half, regulating the pace and limiting CSUDH to only 23 second half points. The Tritons made 14-of-24 shots in the second half including 5-of-12 from long distance.

Head coach Bill Carr’s team turned up the defensive intensity, forcing 20 Cal State Dominguez Hills turnovers, 11 of which came in the second half. Additionally, UCSD went 8-for-14 from the charity stripe while CSUDH made only 6-of-15 from the foul line.

Cal State Dominguez Hills plays one more road game in the regular season -- Wednesday night at Cal Poly Pomona. They finish the season at home next Saturday night against Cal State Monterey Bay. UC San Diego travels to Northern California next weekend for its final two regular season games. The Tritons will take on San Francisco State at 8 p.m. on Friday evening and Sonoma State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
